so my wife took our dumped on our road shi-tzu to the vet
Edited on Fri Dec-10-10 08:15 PM by backwoodsbob
it turns out it has cataracts and is going blind..the vet guesses it is about 5 years old and will be blind within a year.

some SON OF A BITCH dropped a poor innocent 5 pound dog to starve to death on the side of a road because they couldn't handle a dog going blind and didn't have the balls to find someone who would handle it

I swear i wish I knew who dropped it..I would knock half his teeth out.

she will be well taken care of now..wife had her trimmed and nails clipped and groomed today..and had her at the vet.She will live a long life here.

I HATE people so bad sometimes

2. You'll be surprised how well she'll do without sight, esp. with your other dogs around.
I've known a couple of blind dogs, and their other senses take over so well that you'd hardly know, particularly if they have other dogs' examples to follow. She's lucky she found you guys.

9. My wife had a blind poodle once
One of our other dogs, Hank, acted as her guide dog. He'd nudge her into position to go out the dog doors both in the kitchen and back porch, watch her outside and then guide her back in when she was ready to come back in. He did this entirely on his own without any effort on our part.

10. I LOVE good people like you all the time.
I share your anger - but the doggie is saved, because of you.

There are more of us than there are of them. Thank you, and give the doggie (name?) a present at Christmas for me.

Give yourself and your wife one from all of us here, too, and thanks.

11. Call it fate, karma, destiny, whatever . . .
She came to your home for a reason, and you've saved her life. Try not to spend energy on the loser(s) who dumped her, cause they lose in the end, and deservedly so.

It's beyond good that she's there with you and your wife. And she will live a happy and loved life. It works out.

12. One of my two kitties was dumped, too, as a young kitten.
I feel the same way as you do about her dumper. The person who rescued my cat lives out in the styx, and more than once, she found a whole litters of barely-weaned puppies that someone tossed along the side of the road. I share your sentiments about people, and it's happening more and more lately.

I your new pooch a candidate for cataract surgery? I understand they have pretty good success with it, even if it's just one eye.

13. Yay! A happy ending for your new family member...
I just went through 463 emails I received today and two of them were to me personally with some funny pictures or a joke and the rest were pleas for homeless dogs/cats, people needing to "re-home" their dogs/cats or someone needing donations for some dog/cat they just rescued that was abused/neglected or injured.

My absolute favorite is the 17 year old maltese that was dumped at the shelter by the owner. He was in such horrible shape medically and suffering so bad, all I could do is convince the shelter to let me adopt him quickly then hold him while my vet humanely helped him over the bridge. I didn't even think the poor little dog would live the length of time it took me to drive to my vet's office.

I hate people too...on days like this, but am so very happy to know there are still a lot of people like you and your wife that, simply put, do the right thing. Thank you!

14. I have a friend who adopted a 17-year-old Maltese.
Casey was also blind. My friend went to look at a house for sale, with a couple of friends, and learned that the elderly couple who were selling the house had plans to have the dog put down before they moved to a warmer climate. Like you, I cannot fathom how anyone could do this and it sends me over the edge. I adopt senior dogs, from rescue. Anyway, my friend adopted the little dog and Casey lived to 21! He had a lot of love and the company of two other small dogs. Thank you for what you did for your little Maltese. Your story made me cry... ;( O8)

17. Sounds like our little Jozie
Found by the cops in the mill town down the road, taken in by somebody who knows somebody at our vet - they could'nt keep her, and Mrs. Mopar had let the vet know we were looking for a little dog.
She, too, is a shi-tzu, and her vision is a little dodgy, but she's the best! She loves to sleep on the top of my old recliner, like Snoopy on his doghouse.:)

19. Yes, they can have surgery for the cataracts but it is very expensive
unless you have pet insurance. I checked with a specialist for my Shih Tsu, but couldn't afford it. The eye finally had to be removed, so she's got a pirate look going on now.

22. I have a blind spanel - 'Grady'. He was blind when we adopted him
three years ago, and his hearing isn't the best either, but he gets around just like a 'seeing' dog. We travel a lot too (in an RV mostly), so he's always having to get used to new places. I'd say he has the territory mapped out with a couple of hours and after that he bumps into nothing. I'd swear he counts stairs!

The only downside is he's no good for playing ball or frisby with.

Our 11 year old sheltie, Emma, has cataracts but is adapting very well. I can't imagine dumping her. I want her last years to be happy, with me, because she's made me so happy.

34. Poor thing
too bad it wasn't chipped. Maybe they let it out to pee and it ran off? I had a black and white 'shit-zoo' and gave it away to a good home. She was cute but sneaky about wetting on rugs. Never, ever saw her go but they developed curious yellow stains on the underside.

Our old Shih-tzu, who we had to put to sleep last year finally, only had one eye (he lost the other one to fire ants in Texas) and didn't see too well out of the other one, but he got along just fine. Bless you for taking care of this poor pup.

36. I hear you and agree
I am dealing with the off-spring of a dumped cat. They are wild 4 month old kittens and won't let me near. About all I can do is feed them and try to trap them for our feral cat spay/neuter program in a couple months. They are so vulnerable and I worry about them every day.
The people who solve their problems by dumping an animal make me sick. They are just heartless.

Best wishes to you and your wife. Knew someone who had two cats - one blind. The sighted cay always went first through the house, checked things out and the other cat would follow. The worked together. It was the sweetest thing I have ever seen.
