Gmail wants my phone number.
Has this happened to anyone else? Can't recall it happening to me ever and I'm kinda paranoid. It claims it's detected "unusual activity" on my account and wants me to give a phone number so it can send me a verification code so I can log in.

Um...weird? I'm really starting to hate Gmail.

(My apologies if this is the dorkiest post ever. Maybe this happens all the time and I've just never heard of it before.)

1. sounds like a phishing scam to me.
Was it addressed to you by name or "Dear valued customer"?

2. Sounds like a scam
Look at the top of that email message. There should be a link that reads: Show Details.

My guess is some scammer with a gmail.com email address is just trolling for phone numbers they can add to their calling list.

It is possible that you got caught up in the great Gawker hack drama that (I think) compromised Google Buzz accounts, but I still, really seriously, doubt Google would be needing your phone number.

Are you unable to log into your Google account?

5. It could be real
got the same thing the other day when I updated my yahoo password. They now text passwords, if the number you entered matches the one they have on file. Not sure at what point they had my number.

Did they just email you out of the blue and ask for your phone number, or were you making a change on the account?

6. Big Brother (Google) wants everyone's phone number
I was going to open a you tube account, until they required my number. I guess they're going after current users now.
