The oil spill in the gulf of Mexico. I really don't think the oil could have killed off marine life, however that could be an untrue story.

Back in ww2 subs and ships were going around sinking oil tankers all over the oceans and in bays, and there was not a huge ecological problem.

I do understand there was an issue with an oil spill close to Alaska beaches, but to say that oil well could have killed all the sea life that lives on bottom of ocean, makes no sense, since oil floats.


So if there is damage from that oil spill, it would be more rational to assume it is from the dispersant, or just a made up news story. Don't live in that region, so not sure, but the dilution rate in the entire gulf is huge.

1. I don't think that all the oil floats. Some of it it so heavy and dense it stays down at the bottom.

Especially since it was released from that depth.

Also, the pressure of the ocean mass may be able to keep things submerged that would normally drift to the top.

The damage of the spill (not an if) is likely from both the oil that is certainly down there still, and the dispersant that never should have been applied.

This is my opinion and I believe it to be fairly correct.

There is most definitely a whole lot of oil still down there.

It's heavily documented at this point.

And it has killed, and will continue to kill a whole variety of marine life.

Possibly human life as well.

2. It definitely killed some things.

I live in Biloxi, MS, which has for many years been a major source for oysters. Oystermen dug up a lot of empty shells this year and prices are much higher than usual. Shrimp weren't nearly as plentiful either. I haven't known anyone who has found a problem with the seafood that has been caught -- I've eaten plenty of it and can't tell the difference between this year and previous years; but the spill has obviously had an effect.
