Can anyone diagnose this HDTV problem?
It's my son's TV and I rarely watch it, but sometimes when I do, I find that every few seconds, the signal cuts out and the screen goes blank. Of course, after a few minutes of this, it's completely unwatchable so I give up.

Thing is, when the TV is in his room, it must not do this, because he's never complained about it. When he's not home, I take the TV into another room to watch.

In both cases, the TV is attached to a cable box via an HDMI cable. Same cable, so that's not it.

Should I suspect the cable box or the TV itself? There are two HDMI ports and it happens with both.

2. Check the resolution - the cable box may be set too high for that TV
We have satellite not cable, but we have to make sure the highest resolution is not too great for our HDTVs. I've seen computer monitors do the switch on & off when the resolution or refresh rate was set too high for them.

4. I'll look for a setting for that
The funny thing is that it doesn't always happen. I watched it for an hour before this started happening, and then it was every few seconds.

5. Then there may be a problem with the TV
I had one old one years ago (so long ago it was my first color TV) that would do the shutting off thing once it warmed up. But I had to leave it on for a while for it to start doing it. It took several trips to the repair shop for them to find the problem since they never wanted to leave it on long enough to get it hot enough to start the problem.

Maybe your son doesn't watch TV for very long at a time so it never gets fully warmed up? Or maybe it's in a cooler location in his room?

7. or bad power in your room?
is it on a strip, does it go totally off or just black?

It could be the box, take your box into your sons room and set it up see if it happens there.

6. Is there anything on top of the cable box?
Some of the cable boxes don't vent very well and when they start to overheat that kind of problem will start.

My Parents were having this problem all because they had their fancy Bose sound controller box sitting on top the cable box. The guy at the cable company told me to put it above the other box and ever since they haven't had a problem.
