A Sleeping Cat Prevents Heart Attacks
This is a public service announcement. If you're prone to Type-A behavior, get a cat. Cats are so laid back they inspire Type-B behavior, or whatever it is that makes you take things less stressfully. If they have no reason to stay awake, cats nod off.

It's said that having tropical fish is good for your heart, and there's no reason not to believe that. But cats are air-breathing mammals the same as we are. When cats are cranking out those alpha waves, there is peace and serenity all around.

The doctor gave me the whole spiel about heart health - exercise, diet, and avoidance of stress. But I would say the best de-stressors in my life are my two cats, who both love to sleep. There's a wonderful atmosphere of calm when the cats are sleeping.

When the going gets tough, the tough take a snooze.

1. great post. I agree -- I have one sleeping on my lap, and the other
curled up in a shoebox on my desk. Four others are snoozing somewhere else around the house. :hi:

2. Ah, I totally agree!
Don't know if it'll keep me from having heart disease, but my 7 (almost 8) kitties certainly ease my heart on many levels. I have 3 snoozing beside me now and often wake up to 5 or 6 on the bed with me.

Peace and serenity. Who doesn't need that? :)

3. Everything I know about relaxation, I learned from cats.
My girl curls up into a tight little ball and snores. She makes little cooing noises in her sleep like a pigeon.

4. Agree
I get a lesson in chilling out every day from my two felines. In the winter, they are most active first thing in the morning, as they demand that the fire in the woodstove be rekindled. The minute it's warm enough, they sack out in front of it and don't move for the rest of the day and night, until they take their places on the bed. (We call the bedtime ritual "Wake up; it's time to go to sleep".)

Oh yeah, and the more mellow of the two cats (the other is neurotic) sleeps on my head and purrs. Very good for falling asleep.

8. Very true.
When they're sleeping, they prevent heart attacks. The one sleeping on my lap, however, drives me toward a heart attack or stroke when she is awake. It's only when she is asleep that I find peace. Most. Annoying. Cat. On. The. Planet.

15. Kitty Beds
Those kitty beds were designed by somebody who understands cats. They love the security of total wrap-around body contact.

That's going to be my Christmas present for Gracie, who likes to curl up on my belly at five in the morning.

18. Only the Dog Knows His Name
I think cats recognize their names but they are so independent they'll never let on. There are bomb-sniffing dogs at the airport but not bomb-sniffing cats . . . not because cats can't sniff a bomb. They'll sniff and say to themselves, Lucky for me, I'm not getting on that plane.

17. I read somewhere that petting a cat lowers one's blood pressure
(My own blood pressure lower-er is stretched out on my down coat, which is draped over the back of the couch, and just looked up sleepily when I started typing this.)

20. Fixin' to Die
Remember the story of the cat in the nursing home who always knew when one of the residents was about to expire? The cat never missed! It got so that the medical staff would notify the families to tell them they should come over to say good-bye to their loved one. The doctors avoided telling them why they thought the end was near.

19. Cats can teach many things.......and what does a cat do after a big long snooze?
They stretch. They arch the back, expand the claws. They go into
a self induced shiver type motion. I learn a lot from my cats.
So yu humanz don't forget to stretch when you get up.

25. I'm a type B and I love my two cats. But they are more disciplined than me. As it gets late
they'll leave the livingroom and head towards the bedroom...trying to lure me to bed.

29. That sounds familiar...
When I was in a 350 sq ft bachelor apartment, I had a single bed; if I stayed up too late, my kitty would lie across the bed in such a way as to prevent me from lying down. I learned fairly quickly to get into bed on time! (I know, I know - a non cat-person would just take the cat off the bed. That's not how cat people operate, though.) My apartment and my bed are bigger now, but I still try to get into bed before her on work nights.

27. Does it count when your cat sits on your face, then proceeds
to lick your eyelids while YOU sleep?

One of ours has a terrible habit of scaring the living shit outta me during the night. :(
