I got the newest Kindle for Xmas, but the problem is that I don't read books

and have not bought a book in a couple of years. Besides, being poor I find the price at my local public library to be exactly right to get books or cds or dvds.

So why would I want to keep this Kindle?

Gutenberg Project for one, and lots of free books for download at the Kindle site.

I read lots of articles and things online, but not books. I got myself trained to fall asleep within 15 minutes after starting to read a book so I just don't read them anymore. I do enjoy listening to books on cd though and I often do that.

The friend who gave me this Kindle said she almost got me one a couple of years ago and I thought "thank god" since I had zero interest in one. Unfortunately, I did not tell her that because I didn't think it would ever come up again.

For me the public library has the Kindle beat for me hands down.

I do enjoy listening to books on cd while I am out walking because it's inconvenient to fall asleep that way.

5. I will likely give it to my 19 y.o. goddaughter who will enjoy it.

Ironically she got me a Borders gift card for Christmas in spite of the fact that there are no Border's book stores near me and I did ask her when the last time she saw me read a book (she sees me everyday). The other funny thing is that her mother, who gave me the Kindle along with her husband, also gave me a book light earlier when we were opening presents and I told her that I don't read books. Then the Kindle came up (wrapped) and when I felt its weight I said "good thing it's not a book". I was kind of funny and she is fine with her daughter getting it.

For me, if I want or need anything I simply buy it for myself. I don't need to receive them as gifts and do not give any hints that I want things. I did tell my goddaughter that I would be perfectly happy with a box of chocolates, and I was.

7. you don't, see if you can get a receipt/gift receipt/somehow return it

when i was younger and i got completely useless inappropriate gifts from people who clearly didn't have a clue, i just returned them for cash/credit

these days i guess i've got everyone trained, a lot of gifts i've gotten this year are already in the form of that long green rectangular stuff that's always in fashion...

seriously i DO read books, a LOT of books, and a kindle would be giving me the gift of a huge expense (any free public domain book i want to read i've ALREADY read) -- i keep my book costs down by using the library, swapping physical books w. people at hostels, airplanes, etc. used book store and so on -- keeping my actual book buying budget to a few select books (which usually NEED to be in paper form so i don't have to worry about logging about a lot of electrical crap/batteries/converters in my travels about the world)

a friend started to buy me a kindle but i pointed out that while it was a nice gesture it would actually be something i wouldn't use, unless i wanted to start spending more money just to humor him, so he cxl'd the order and got me something else...

i wish more people ASKED if they weren't sure before selecting an expensive gift, you feel bad about it no matter what you do if it's useless to you and you know it cost the other person real cash

13. One of my problems is that I am unemployed and wanted to keep Xmas simple and inexpensive.

I did not want anyone to buy me an expensive gift, but particularly one I cannot use. A gift certificate would have been great and money even better.

Once upon a time I did read a lot of books, but that has been years. The friend who bought me this Kindle bought me the book about the 2008 presidential campaign and I have still not finished it.

i have five books from library i have to get read, then my hubby ordered one from kindle this morning, that i have been waiting for.

12. I actually got to see the physical Kindle and it is way too small for me.

I use a 28" monitor online for reading and posting and I increase the screen size on it. If I were to increase the print size on the Kindle the reading would be a choppy 5 words at a time and really unnatural.

I've given it to my goddaughter and she loves it. My solution for book reading if I were to read books: the public library.

I used to read lots of books, but not anymore. The reading at bedtime: that's part of the problem. Over the years my body has been trained to fall asleep after more than 10 minutes of continuous reading due to reading in bed before I go to sleep.

I've read books for over 50 years and I just don't enjoy it anymore. Sorry, we cannot all be the same.

Even though you haven't read a book in a couple of years, you COULD, you know. Just because you haven't done something in awhile doesn't mean you will never do it again. Unless you mean you don't like to read books, which is something else entirely.

20. I gave it to my goddaughter.

In 50 years I have read many, many books. I now find it hard to read books (on my 28" computer monitor I can easily increase the print size) and I just don't like to read books anymore. If I want to read a book I can easily get it at my friendly, local library. Besides, that Kindle is very small.

Kindle, BTW...one of its advantages is you can increase the font size and type to make it large and bold, unlike books. It also weighs less than a book and is easier to hold and read in bed. (I've been reading up on it, trying to decide if I want it. So far, it's not cheap enough. But the free books are tempting.)

But you're right about the library. That's a great place to get a book to read. And don't you just love going to the library? There's just something about it...and everyone in there has the same interest! I just looooove books. Was going to become an English teacher at one point, but I got too wild and lost track of my plans. (I turned out all right, though. I make a decent living, but my literary education is lacking. :()

25. I started going to my city's library when I was just about 6 years old.

Although the present building is maybe 45 years old it is still on the same corner as the one I went to over 50 years ago. Yes, there is something special about the library because not only can I get books there I can get them on cd to listen while I walk (I love having a book read to me--reminds me of when I was a little kid) there are music cds and dvds. No, a Kindle is not the same as a library. Besides, there have been very few books that I have read that I ever read again more than once (aside from LOTR) and so I have no reason to always have them on hand either physically or digitally.

I haven't seen many good reviews about it.

If anyone here is familiar w/it, can you please give an honest assessment as to how well it stacks up against the Kindle or Nook? I know I can access library books w/it but, aren't many of the other choices kind of limited?

Besides, if I want to read a book I'll get it for free at the library and I find a visit there much more fulfilling than a Kindle (which I find to be too small since I am writing this using a 28" monitor having increased the text size).
