1. one of the best athletes of his generation, too
He was the first player to be an All-American two years in a row. (His name was stricken from the records in 1949 during the HUAC affair, though.)

A man of tremendous talents, courage, and conviction.

Great song! :kick:

4. Had the pleasure of hearing him in concert a couple of times. He
was excellent in a stage production of Othello also. The man had a tremendous presence. He was very vocal about his politics during the last concert, shortly after that he did go to Russia embracing theCommunist doctrine.

3. I can't imagine how wonderful it was to hear his voice at a strike rally.

5. He was a bass, not a baritone.
If you can sing Old Man River you are a bass, NOT a baritone.

Samuel Ramey does Old Man River. He's a bass.

Some basses go into baritone repertoire (mainly Don Giovanni and Leporello) and some baritones go down into bass repertoire (Mefistofeles, Sarastro from the Magic Flute, Scarpia in Tosca).

Bryn Terfel has done the penultimate scene in Don Giovanni, playing all three parts. Don Giovanni is a baritone, his servant Leporello is a baritone, and The Commendatore, the statue, is a bass.

And he does change his voice substantially for the bass part. It's on his latest DGG CD, "Bad Boys".
