Anyone Else Miss Siskel and Ebert?
Edited on Tue Feb-22-11 06:36 AM by JCMach1

They were part of the fabric of life growing up in the 1980's. Today, you simply can't get fun and intelligent discussion of movies on broadcast media.

Was reading an article by Ebert today and was thinking... I sure miss those two guys together and how it was a part of my life.

I know, nostalgia for film critics...

1. Back in the BC days (before cable) it was one of my favorite PBS shows.
My family used to groan whenever it came on , "just two boring guys arguing about movies", but dammit I wanted to watch it. Funny thing is I always sided with Siskel, until he pooped on 'The Big Lebowski', but by that time he was sick and not his old self. :-(

I considered them sherpa-like in leading the viewer away from the boring/mundane/formulaic crap to seek out the real filmmakers , the "artists" if you will. (ut-oh I hear groaning).

Ebert has a new show back on PBS, hosted by a couple of young newcomers that I haven't quite warmed up to. It's shown on the local college run station at some ungodly hour, too. :-(

p.s. eventually my family came to enjoy these two as much as I did, as some of their early arguments were quite entertaining.

2. Yup. Even when they were wrong you could tell they knew
what they were talking about. Lots of inside good stuff. Also interesting how they got to be friends over the years, starting from below zero.
