Is it rude to ask someone, "Did you have orthodonture/braces?"

Reason I ask is sometimes when someone's teeth are sooo straight and well-aligned, I wonder about this.

On edit: BTW I had braces. But if you met me that wouldn't immediately leap into your mind.

I guess unless you thought theirs were really well done and you were inquiring for yourself/your child whatever, then it would be okay I think... but just out of curiosity, because you think their teeth are "sooo straight and well-aligned" strikes me as somewhat rude.

....especially since you've had braces yourself.

Bring up your own braces experience first. Then ask.
