Anti-war songs

“And the Band Played Waltzing Matilda” was written by Eric Bogle, and is performed here by Liam Clancy. The Pogues also have a stirring rendition of the song.

This is a powerful ballad that speaks to the horror and futility of war. It honors Australians who fought in the deadly Battle of Gallipoli at Suvla during WWI.

The 1981 Australian film Gallipoli was also about the ill-fated Gallipoli Campaign. The movie gave me my first glimpse of Mel Gibson. He delivered a stunning performance. I’ll never forget it, or the movie.

Anyone else have a favorite song to share that deglorifies war?

2. Wow, that was chilling!
I'd never hear of the Burns Sisters before. I'm going to listen to some more of their music now.

Thanks for posting. It's a great anti-war song!

3. I hadn't heard of them either.
I was familiar with the song, which is the same as "When Johnny comes marching home", but at a slower tempo and with lyrics that are, shall we say, less enthusiastic about war. i listened to a few renditions on YouTube. When I heard the Burns Sisters, I stopped searching.

4. Oh god, so I've heard this song several times but didn't realize there was a music video...

The lyrics always make me cry but oh god I just bawled like a baby... Not for the feint of heart.

I know what you mean about lyrics making you cry. This is a real eye stinger.

8. "Another Man's Cause" by the Levellers
It's not that great a song, but I like the chorus.

9. Way too many to list
"Down by the Riverside," "I Ain't a Marchin' Anymore," "Wonderin' Where the Lions Are," "Waist Deep in the Big Muddy," "Born in the USA," "Fortunate Son," "A Montreal Song," "Is There Anybody Here."

That'll do for a start.
