RIP Big Man

Brian Hickey —RIP Clarence Clemons Clarence Clemons, the saxophonist in Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, whose jovial onstage manner, soul-rooted style and brotherly relationship with Mr. Springsteen made him one of rock's most beloved sidemen, died Saturday at a hospital in Palm Beach, Fla. He was 69.

8. RIP Big Man
One of my favorite performances by him, with Ringo's All Starr Band, doing The Weight. His sax is outstanding as usual but him and Billy Preston singing backups on this is just pure gold ....

15. Crushed
I'm on vacation in Barcelona and the guy at the front desk told me about his death. He thought I seemed like a Springsteen fan. Not sure what that means but he was correct.

Loss of an icon. :(

16. We were so lucky to have had his music in our life for so long
Saw him on the Born to Run Tour in 1977, and many times afterward.

We should all celebrate how lucky we were to have the Big Man.

19. That's the gist of my reaction on the LBN thread about Clarence; sad, but eternally grateful
to have the E Street Band's music in my life. And Clarence was literally my inspiration to learn the sax in the late 70's. I'd actually been practicing along with Southside Johnny's first album when I took a break and saw Hissyspit's LBN posting that Clarence had died. One of the great compliments I ever heard about a musician, that I'd attributed to Bruce having said some time or another, (but not sure now whether it was Bruce or a music writer, but anyway...) about Clarence: " A man who may actually know who put the bomp". I recently watched the entire '75 Hammersmith Odeon show DVD , and among my favorite moments was Clarence raising his fists and spitting out the words "east coast...muscle" in Tenth Avenue Freeze Out.

So yes, thankful to have had the Big Man, his soulful saxophone and his joyful presence, but at the same time, teardrops on the city...
