I feel compelled to see it.

3. there is that, I'll agree with you. Have to wait until DVD, though
I don't like theaters, and 3D especially makes me feel nauseous.

6. I saw it
and I'm no film critic but I liked it.

Saw it with my son, who has a minor in film studies. He was sorta critical of it, pointing things out that I, an everyday glassy-eyed movie-goer, would never notice. Plot devices, dialogue issues, etc.

But I thought it was fun. LOTS of action and cool scenery.

8. I liked it better when it was called "Serenity"
Oh, God, I'm so sorry for referencing David Spade....but still, the commercials made me think of Serenity's mix of SciFi and Western.

12. "High Concept..."
I believe that is the term for such movies in Hollywood. Movies sold over expense account lunches ("Hey, let's make a movie about cowboys AND aliens.!!")
Makes you want to rethink the definitions of "high" AND "concept."
That said, I'm sure I'll watch it when it gets to my TV.

13. My experience...
high-concept is usually thought up at 3am with pizza, pot and Pepsi. High-concept being "high concept" as often as not.

"Hey man, :smoke: what about a movie with aliens fighting cowboys and shit, we'll get that hot chick from House, Han Solo and James Bond. Pass the pepperoni, fucknugnutniz!"

(Did you just say "Fucknugnutniz"? You're fuckin' baked.)

I was a screnewriter once and all my friends worked in film...my roommate was nominated for a best picture Oscar. He didn't win.

26. The first time I ever heard the expression "High Concept" was with ALF.
Coincidence that this movie and ALF involved aliens-- I think it comes down to "this ain't no character study." Anyway, I have to see this one. Yes, I'm easily entertained...

18. I saw it last night. A total cheese tray, but I liked it.
Think of it as the best movie Irwin Allen never made. Daniel Craig totally channels Steve McQueen, Harrison Ford is great as

a mean, crochety old fuck. Olivia Wilde is, of course The Hot Babe With A Secret, and the supporting cast is great.

No, it's not a bit original- but the old tropes are mostly reused well. Think "The Outlaw Josey Wales" mashed up with

"Independence Day".

Harrison was a grumpy malicious old guy. I was ready to aim some kind of alien-ney widget at him just cause he was so nasty.

36. SPOILER ALERT!!!
To learn about their weaknesses. In order to mine for the gold, the aliens needed to know the characteristics of the indigenous people.

They didn't seem to be doing much of that studying of folks, though, come to think of it.

I admit  Saturday night at the most crowded theater, that was me.
It was fun. My first crush was Harrison Ford and my crush now is Daniel Craig, so of course I can't hate on it. Craig was as cute as ever :loveya:

29. The critics will probably hate it.
Edited on Sun Jul-31-11 09:15 PM by BiggJawn
I saw it, I didn't fall asleep, but I didn't feel like going home and slitting my wrists afterwards either.
Critics seem to only like movies that depress the living fuck out of me.
They HATED "Larry Crowne". OK, so it's not Oscar material, but it's not "Atlas Shrugged, part one", either. I thought it was an enjoyable marshmallow as long as you weren't expecting your live to be changed.

So the Critics will probably hate "Cowboys and Aliens", too.

And "The Valley of Gwangi" had more cheez that a Wisconsin Stuckey's.

31. I heard a review of it by Anne Hornaday, film critic for the Washington Post
Friday evening while driving home. She admitted she had gone into the film ready to absolutely hate it and was amazed to find that the movie wasn't bad. So, not all critics will hate it.
