Poll question: I got a membership application for AARP in the mail today...
I'm turning 50 for the first time this coming October 27.

I'm wondering if it's a good idea to join.

Is it?

1. Hubby and I use AARP for it's original purpose - to save money on insurance
We save between $350 to $500 a year on auto insurance. In addition, we have a supplemental policy through AARP that will pay us a good portion of our co-pay in case of hospitalization. Unfortunately since we are in Florida, their homeowner's insurance company does not offer policies here or I'd probably be with them.

I use my AARP card to get discounts where ever possible - usually I save 10-20% on motels. An acquaintance uses their cruise discounts regularly - he and his wife go on cruises two or three times a year and have been all over the Caribbean, to the Mediterranean and to Alaska. I've used their travel feature to check out hotels since they include some that AAA does not have.

AARP also offers coupons and discounts from various companies on their website, but most of those places are not ones I normally do business with so I've only used that feature once.

I also make sure to participate in every survey they have about political issues, trying to skew the results to the left as much as possible.

3. Dude. Don't do it.
As soon as you do, out of nowhere kids will walk on your lawn.

6. I think they want me to join to stop deforestation.
Then they wouldn't be sending me an application every week.

8. I got my first membership application when I was 38. The year I "retired" from the military.
I keep getting them off and on since.

If you travel a lot on your own dime, the discounts might be worth it.
