Mom had a stroke Tues. morning.
Edited on Sat Oct-08-11 05:03 PM by oneshooter
Not just a stroke, the doctors referred to it as a"massive stroke". The CAT scan showed that the entire right side of the brain was affected. I was spending the night at her house and tried to wake her that morning and she was garbled and had no movement on her left side. Called 911 and the local volunteer para medics arrived in 10min. Got here to the hospital where they found that a part of the clot had entered her lower abdominal area and blocked blood flow to her small intestine. At 10:00am she was in surgery and they removed 5' of her small intestine that was "dead or dying" and stinted around the clot. The 2 hr. surgery saved her life.
She is resting and can move her right arm/hand/leg, and her head, can see, and will respond to her name. The breathing tube was pulled yesterday and she is breathing on her own. Mom has always been a strong woman and has surprised the doctors. She has a long way to go, but with the help of modern meds, and her close net family I am hoping for the best. She turned 75 last month.

2. Help her back as best you can
My mom had a minor stroke just after she turned 75. It blasted her ability to read, which she was slowly
relearning. Another stroke less than six months later killed her almost instantly.

If your mom can be helped, get her the best care you can. What time you have left can be snatched away any time,
take it from one who was there and had it happen.

3. Good thing you were there
Glad they were able to find the clot so quickly and is already off the ventilator. She sounds like a fighter.

7. Her abilities so far sound promising. Remember that sometimes when, as a stroke survivor...
.
.
.
... she is regaining functions, she may become frustrated and angry. If she is able to come
back that far, don't take anything personally -- be happy that she's regained what she
has and treat her with patience and understanding (obviously no need to say "with love" --
she is lucky indeed to have you... as you have been lucky to have her).
.
.
.
Strength and healing vibes going out to her and you and all involved.
.
.
.
The family support will be a GREAT big deal.

9.  There are 6 of us standing a 24hr watch in her room. We "bribe" the nurses with cupcakes
and kolaches daily. Today she will have a nutrition supplement added to her IV. She raised her right hand above her shoulder for the first time!. The Docs tell us that the newest CT scans show that she has stopped bleeding in the damaged areas.

She is a strong woman, and she has the support of a very close knit family. We all do whatever to support her.

13. I am so, so sorry that you and your Mom are going through this...
But the good news is that she can breathe on her own and you have a lot of hope. Sending you both all the positive vibes that I've got. I certainly feel for you, since three weeks ago, tonight, I was sitting by my mother's hospital bed... Wishing for a complete recovery for your Mom...

17. Thanks be that you were there and for the excellent medical care
Sounds like you did everything right. Time and medication are the two biggest factors now. She will need home-care too, after she leaves a skilled nursing/rehabilitation facility. People do best if they can return to their homes after recovering from an illness, especially a stroke, the familiarity matters even more then. Good luck to all of you.

18. If you are going to be ill, then there is no better place than Houston.
Between Methodist, Baylor, Memorial Hermann, and a dozen others there is a specialist for any major illness.

The stomach tube is out and she is receiving IV food. I made a sign to go on the IV bag.

Contents:
Roast Beef w/carrots and potatoes
Cut green beans
Gravy
Strawberry Shortcake

The nurses loved it!

26. Good vibes to your mom -
My father had a bad stroke in July and seemed to be recovering soon after, but two days later had another massive stroke from another clot that was hiding in an artificial arterial valve and that killed him. He had just turned 75 three weeks prior.
It's scary, but if they found most of the clots, she's got a good chance.

27.  She is going to rehab. Thanks very much for the vibes and wishes
She is strong and won't let this slow her down too much. There is a long hard job ahead for both her and the family. But we are close and will stand together, and win.

Again THANK YOU from Mom and the Family

30. Keep up the good work
People may get better care if they are good to work with and that includes family. Sad, but true. So keep charming those nurses and it doesn't hurt to bring in a big box of chocolates or cookies for the staff, once in a while.
