Women chocoholics ‘run smaller risk of strokes’

Have a sweet tooth? It could protect you from a stroke, according to a large Swedish study published Tuesday on women chocolate-lovers.

“We followed 33,000 women over the course of 10 years, and we found that those who ate most chocolate had a much lower risk — 20 percent lower — of suffering a stroke,” said Susanna Larsson, one of three researchers at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm who carried out the study.

The study, published this week in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, began in 1997 when the researchers asked 33,372 women in Sweden between the ages of 49 and 83 to fill out a questionnaire on their eating habits.

it's the high-cocoa content that counts. So, go to your local Whole Foods (or similar type grocery) and buy the high-quality dark chocolates with at least 70% cocoa content. I've found some good ones that go up to 89%, but that's pushing it ;)

An alternative to the grocery is to get a copy of Dessert Professionals (formerly "Chocolatier" magazine), skip to the ads in the back (if you can!) and order your chocolate by the 5-10kg slab }(

6. Thank goodness it seems to work with milk chocolate!

I love milk chocolate, but the older I get, the less I can stand dark chocolate. It tastes like bitter wax to me now...Weird, I know.
