Anyone watch the PBS show about crows on tonight?
It's called A Murder of Crows.
Pretty neat stuff. They have lifetime mates, they stay in extended families. Aunts, uncles and cousins help feed and protect the young. They speak in two "languages". One for the general crow population and a more complicated one for the family.

Here's a link to the show.

2. They use tools,too.
Unlike chimps that simply use a stick, they fashion hooks on their sticks. Pretty smart.

We have quite a few crows in this area. Sometimes we hear a "murder of crows" - and I mean at least 30- flying around, swirling in the air together and cawing to each other. It's really raucous and makes me laugh. I don't know what they are so excited about. Then a bunch will vie for perches on the uppermost branches of a tall evergreen tree in my neighbor's yard, and once they settle on the tree they are quiet.

Each spring a pair will usually build a nest at the top of a tall pine or bunya-bunya tree near here- the crow's nest on a ship's mast is well named. The crows have swooping air battles against Swainson's hawks, defending their nest and young.

5. Thanks! I'll watch it.
I have always liked crows and ravens. I swear I KNOW they are trying to tell me something when they caw at me, or of course make any other number of interesting sounds. I knew just by how they act that they are smart and have a sense of humor, too.

I just loved this program. If you watch this you will look at crows in a brand new light.

I have several crows that fly in from time to time. I think there is usually about five of them.
When they start to make noise they really can get loud, and it gets my attention.
The racket is usually an alarm that a hawk is getting too close.
The crows always chase the hawk away. Crows win.
