Any fans here of sandwich spread????
That other thread had unnecessary grossness.

Let's keep our food discussions clean.

10. Are we talking Mayo and Miracle Whip, or the various chopped meat products you can buy?
My local store makes a spread out of ground baloney, pickle relish, and DADT. It's pretty good.
Then there's Underwood Deviled Ham. Kinda salty, and a layer of grease on top when you open the can.
Underwood "roast beef" spread. Alpo for people. Almost as bad as Armour's Potted Meat "product"...
And the afore-mentioned Potted Meat "Product". DADT. Don't know what's in it, don't wanna know...

And I like both Miracle Whip and Hellman's. The original, not the shit made with olive oil, or with peppers or wasabi, or whatever.

12. We used to make our own sandwich spread.
All the ends and mis-slices of bologna, leona bologna, pickle and olive loaves, any type of baked, boiled or chopped ham, pickle relish, Mirace Whip, and paprika.

Made fifty pounds at a time, and packed it into ten pound tubs.

That stuff flew out of the store.

We had to stop making it after the ingredient labeling laws came into force; it was hard to have to label every package sold with the ingredients from ten different sources.

We still made some for our own consumption, it always made for a nice sandwich.

17. I keep cans of Underwood for hurricanes, I like the roast beef the best.
It keeps forever, good for camping.

I fix it like tuna fish, with Miracle Whip.

I don't like the ham or chicken spread to much.

You don't need to keep it cold.

I need to see how well my Vitamix works at mildly blending canned chickpeas, celery, relish and vegenaise for a faux tuna salad recipe I've got. Used to do it in my Cuisinart, but the bowl is cracked.

42. Okay, you asked for it!!!
No really, you did ask for it, so here it is :D

Mock Tuna Salad

Category: Sandwiches/Burgers

Ingredients:
-----------------------------------------------------
2 cans of garbanzo beans, drained
1 tbsp lemon juice
4 tbsp Veganaise, to taste
5 tbsp pickle relish, to taste
2 tbsp nutritional yeast flakes
3/4 cup finely chopped onion

Instructions:
-----------------------------------------------------
Place all of the ingredients except the onion and pickle relish into a food processor and process until it reaches the desired texture (you probably don't want it too smooth). Then stir in the onion and pickle relish. Refrigerate.

Additional comments:
-----------------------------------------------------
Goes great on bread or crackers.

My Comments
Pretty much all of the above, or just eat it straight out of the bowl :9

46. I use sweet, but I would guess it doesn't matter.
I'm not a fan of dill pickles (though I do like dill as a flavoring in other things.) If you like them, try it, or find some other substitute. How about finely diced bell peppers? :)

If you've never tried it, get the small jar, probably of the "standard" kind with canola oil. I like the grapeseed oil kind because that's supposed to be even better for you :D

Oh, and it's sold refrigerated, so don't go looking on the regular shelves. I buy it at Whole Foods, so it should be available at all the other similar groceries people around here promote (because they hate WF :P)

38. I think it does.
It has a firm texture like mayo, too.

It will get a bit runny toward the end of the jar, like the last ounce or so. I'll use it like that, too, but it would probably be best in something that calls for mayo as an ingredient if you don't like it that way...

Or find yourself a veggie friend that likes it and try some of theirs :)

It looks good! Once I make it work as written, then I might see how well it works with coconut milk. I tend to buy that now when I want something milky. It's a helluva lot more expensive than any other alternative, but worth it! :9

47. Eww, I haven't thought of that stuff in years, but we always had it
in the refrigerator when I was growing up. When one of my sisters was little, she said she wanted a "little pickles" sandwich and she meant sandwich spread. We always called it little pickles after that. I have never bought it since becoming and adult and haven't even seen it. Heck, I didn't even know they still made that stuff.
