11. They were here!
They built a franchise less than a mile from my house. The building is still there, but of course, as a mom and pop diner.

Our neighbor down the street was the manager. He brought me a CASE of glow in the dark Burger Chef frisbees when I was about 7 or 8 (so this would be about 1972/1973).

I also remember going to the one at 10 Mile and the Southbound Lodge Service Drive in the summer of 1981 when I attended a summer program for high school students at Lawrence Tech. At that time, they had a burger bar -- you could buy the cheapest thing on the menu, and load it up with cheese, bacon, etc, and pretty much make yourself a little salad, too - worked out great for a 16 year old boy on a budget.

Don't remember exactly when they went out, but it had to be not long after 1981.

3. I think they were shut down when his employment of Jeff proved to violate child labor laws
today Burger Chef lives alone in a retirement home in central Arkansas and Jeff can be seen on next season's "Celebrity Rehab."

7. Used to be a HUGE treat in my family.
We'd go and then we'd get to (gasp!) EAT in the CAR!!!!!!!!!!

That source of fun came to a compete end the day we went to Grandma's house for some kind of gathering. Dad never liked going there too much, but he'd do it because it made my mom happy. Anyhow, dad was all dressed up for a visit to Grandma's and he sat on a Burger Chef ketchup packet that had escaped into the car seat on one of our family outings. By the time we realized it, it was too late to turn around, so Dad had a red spot on his ass all day long. I'll not go into the comments made at the time, but I will say he was highly pissed and quite colorful in his commentary.

After that, our fun ended--he flat out REFUSED to eat in the car EVER again.

Good times.

Laura

8. Jackson, Michigan (pop 50,000) mid-60's ...
.
.
.
... hamburgers were 18 cents apiece (and about the size of today's
basic hamburgers -- if not a little bigger). I'm pretty sure combos
were not even a gleam in their daddy's eye back then.
.
The only fastfood joint on our side of town (except for the MUCH
superber A&W Root Beer stand that had no food other than soft-serve
ice cream-type desserts and cones -- AND you could bring your own
container (like a washed gallon milk container) and they would fill
it with draft A&W root beer -- like the beer growlers of old.
.
If I amember correctly, the chain pretty much folded and a Burger
King had moved into its location by the early 70's (much better
burgers).

9. Yes indeed. I had relatives in Lake Milton, Ohio and we'd frequently go there.
That was back in my red meat days when I was a kid. Now I'm strictly a veggie burger kind of person. :)

18. damn, I miss our Stuckeys store
there used to be one at exit 312 - on our State trust lease - they had the BEST fries of anyplace ever and it was so handy to feed a work crew down there (so I could play cowboy instead of cook!)

plus we could get gas (-oline, MFM - fuel for the vehicles) without leaving the ranch - which with some of our vehicles very much reduced odds of getting tickets

Then it closed and became Rax - another near-dead restaurant.

Burger Chef was some good stuff. Anyone have a GD Ritzys? Liked them a lot too. Apparently they renamed themselves "Ritzys" and have just one location in Texas.

My favorite was the Super Chef. I was so skinny in the 70's and could have a Super Chef whenever I wanted.

21. There used to be one on the Outer Loop in San Antonio when I was a kid.
My dad used to take me and my brother with him when he would run "guy errands"; banking, paying bills, etc. And these trips would end with Dad taking us to Burger Chef for a treat. Ah, good times...
