I'm getting married next Saturday.
Some of the guys at work tell me I'm crazy. I tell them I know that, but what does that have to do with getting married? ;)

Seriously, I hope that I don't get to be cynical about married life as the years pass. I'm 39 and I've never been married. Neither has my fiance. We've lived together for a year. I told her that we are actually already married, we just haven't gone through the formalities yet. One guy told me that after the marriage license gets signed things change no matter how long you've been with your partner. But I think he was insinuating struggles with money matters. I think we've got that sorted out.

So the invitations have been sent, the catering is set up, we have the marriage license, the rings have long been bought, and we have the proper attire. I now own a suit for the first time in my life. Now I just have to get over this stage fright and practice my best wedding day kiss and I'll be ready to do this deal. But it's going to happen anyway ready or not. Wish us luck!

Sometimes I suspect a lot of long-married people gripe just because it's the thing to do, easy conversation.
Enjoy the togetherness and sense of commitment....

13. Congrats! Don't listen to other peoples "opinions" on marriage, it is what you
make of it. There will be good times as well as bad times, but all in all it is what you make it out to be, you have to work at it all the time, speaking from 38 years of experience.

When Paul and I got together people said we'd be looking for new partners within 6 months.

We got married on April 1st so that every year that passed would make them bigger fools. That was 24 years and some change ago. Who's laughing now?

And yes, having that license can change things. It confirms the commitment since neither of you can simply walk away from the relationship. But if you have made it this far, neither of you intend to simply walk away.

22. OH, HAPPY DAY!!!!
.
.
.
I think you both appreciate your life together and how lucky you are to
have found each other.
.
I also think you both have a fantastic grasp on idealism AND pragmatism.
I don't see either one of you becoming jaded -- you both present a sort
of never-ending appreciation of life in general... and of each other in
particular.
.
I have faith that you'll both just accept your happiness AND work at it.
.
I don't think either one of you will become jaded about it -- on the
contrary, I bet you'll just appreciate each other more and more with
each passing day/week/month/year/decade.
.
.
.
Your happiness had made ME (and lotsa other folks) happy.
.
Thank you for sharing that happiness. It's wonderful!!!

29. "we just haven't gone through the formalities yet"
Exactly the same words my wife and I used.

We met in 1974, got invited to our own wedding by my brother (who had the time?), and had a double wedding
in Washington (neutral ground, as my wife is from Germany and his is from Japan) in 1982.

We are still very happily together. No time limit or schedule on happiness. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

Things do change once you're married and not necessarily for the worse. When you're living together, it's day to day. Marriage means a committed future together and that does color how you look at things.

(Hubby and I lived together for six years and are coming up on our 30th wedding anniversary.)

It will be 30 years for me in May.

I was a self supporting, divorced mother of 4 children. My husband was a 32 year old never married, still lived at home, single guy.

Our marriage (though trying at times), we both agree, is the best thing we ever did.
