Personal check stolen
Edited on Sun Oct-30-11 09:48 PM by Ahpook
I am out of my mind with worry tonight :(

I wrote a check to my brother(filled in completely)that he was going to cash tomorrow. Problem is it was stolen out of his fucking car this evening. Can the people that stole the wallet do anything with it on a Sunday night? I have searched a bit and can't seem to find a way to cancel the check right now, the only numbers I can find are for lost CC's.

I will of course cancel it tomorrow morning. Think its ok till then?

PISSED :(

1. The bank won't do anything till tomorrow...
I don't know, but I suspect you're OK till then.

Try not to worry.

3. Trying not to
They already tried to use his card twice by the time he called in the theft. The thought of my check still floating around is freaking me out.

I would guess the names would have to changed to do anything with it?

2. Report to bank asap; leave messages, phone + on-line, now if possible.
Bank should honor 'cancel' in a.m.

5. Good. You did what you could, and had to do.
I think you'll be OK. Breathe now!

6. I would think anyone who cashes a check from someone they don't know...
without a photo ID is stupid and deserves to eat the expense.

Imagine their story: "No, I didn't know him, but he did show me a library card so, I gave him the money".
I'm almost certain he'll toss the check before tomorrow. In another day and time this might have been bad news.

7. Yeah, the bank said the same thing
I was there at opening this morning and locked everything down :)My brother on the other hand has a full day ahead of him. They got CC's, drivers license and a spare set of house keys.
