Do people ever drink liquor in English pubs?
Or is just always warm beer?

I'm not a beer drinker, what would be my options?

1. Yes, I enjoyed my first Irish coffee in an English pub
except it was called a Gaelic

Oh, the beer was served at room temperature, hardly warm.

3. Caution: Some pubs will steer you toward a hot whiskey drink...
Whiskey, sugar, and hot water, explaining their crappy stale burnt coffee, that's been sitting around all day, is held in reserved for the drunks.

A hot whiskey isn't bad and can grow on you; you could be drinking stale burnt coffee by the end of the evening if you're not careful.

4. Correction: the beer is not "warm" in English pubs.
It is "room temperature". And remember that you're in England, so room temp is considered about 55 degress fahrenheit.

Now, that's not ice cold, the way Americans generally like their beer, but there's a reason for that. Lagers (what most Americans think of as beer) should be drunk somewhat colder. Ales should be consumed warmer.

Further, warmer temps open up a vast range of flavors you won't get from an icy cold beer. Probably why Coors BRAGS about being "super cold"; it HAS to be in order for you to choke the shit down.

Just for yourself, see if you can get a nice porter or barley wine in a pub. And let it sit for at least ten minutes before taking a sip. You might become a beer fan yet.

8. Brit soldiers in our sister unit spoke of P&P -- Pernod and piss.

I never saw it, but I've also read of it elsewhere. In my personal experience,
only the Australians could best the British for simultaneously nasty/enviable
grossness in their drinking accomplishments.

9. If you want cold beer in a British pub...order "lager."
And of COURSE you can have hard liquor! The Brits invented Gin and Tonic and Gin and Lime and of course they'lll serve you Scotch.
You might get a look if you order Bourbon or Rye...but then. again, its one big happy world these days, so they probably have it.
