Help nail a CA water Co. that drained a lake and destroyed an ecosystem!
Edited on Sun Sep-26-04 11:49 PM by henslee
Wutchumna Water Co in Woodlake, Calif recently and illegally drained historic Bravo lake, killing thousands of fish and wreaking havoc on waterfowl. They failed to contact proper state authorities before doing this heinous act and now claim ignorance. (on edit) they now claim Bravo was not a real lake -- a bold-faced lie.

(originally posted in a CA thread started by Kadie) http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.ph... )

The Fish and Game commission is now investigating. I urge you to contact their executive director. Robert R Treanor <fgc@dfg.ca.gov > and their wildfowl division <dyparraguirre@dfg.ca.gov >. Voice your outrage. Lets make sure these folks get punished. Lets send a message to future violators who think they can wreak environmental havoc with impunity.
(cont'd after photo)

Bravo Lake was home to the Yokut and Wachumna, peaceful Indians who lived along its banks. This is a pic. before levys were built.

Any practical reason Wutchumna Water now claims for draining Bravo lake is irrelevant. Their statements that the lake "only held junk fish" indicates a total lack of remorse for their illegal act. And since when did Wutchumna Water become environmental experts on fish species? This time, we were lucky there no endangered species were killed (that we know of) Next time, we might not be so lucky. Lets make sure they don't get off the hook. Write the Fish and Game Commission and anyone else relevant. I wrote a slew of folks. If anyone wants more email addresses, let me know. I suggest you recommend that the lake be restored to its orginal condition.

2. Something Is Wrong Here...
The link to the modbee story goes to a page that says it isn't there anymore. Did a search of the water company and Bravo Lake, it returned no stories. Went to your previous DU thread link, and it isn't there either!?!?!

What happened? Did they all get scrubbed???

:wtf:

What follows is the body of their email.

I am the Regional Manager for DFG's San Joaquin Valley and Southern Sierra Region. The Regional boundaries include nine counties inclusive of Tulare Co. where Bravo Lake is located.

As the articles have indicated, we are still in the investigative
stages of this incident. The damage at the site has occurred...so we
are focused both on a) the legal aspects of the incident, and b) the
restoration aspects.

I expect information from both aspects will be compiled over the next
few weeks.

I will retain your email address and inform you of the resolution of
this incident.

Thank you for your concern and observations. This was an unfortunate
incident which we will pursue to the extent the law and our management
authorities allow.

Our hope is to restore the fish, wildlife and public benefits at Bravo
Lake, while also meeting the private water company objectives, and
develop a long term relationship with the water company so unfortunate
incidents like this never happen there again.
