Boycott Republicans
I would like to propose that we at DU develop a resource for people who want to boycott companies that support Bush and the Republicans and their agenda. I have found some helpful web resources. But I haven’t yet found a really good source listing US companies that support Bush. There are also lots of resources about socially responsible investing, a broader topic that overlaps the Boycott Republicans issue though.

Can anyone with additional ideas or information please post it here.

Boycott Republicans Resources:

http://www.boycott-republicans.com/
This is really a petition generating site, it does not seem to list companies to avoid

www.ethicalconsumer.org
http://www.boycottbush.net/

These are both UK sites. Boycott Bush lists the top 25 corporate donors to Bush and their UK products, many of which are sold in the US. Does anyone know of a comparable resource for US products and a more comprehensive list?

Socially Responsible Investing:
There are a lot of resources on this. I’ve listed a few that seem really good. It would be really helpful if any DUers with experience or professional knowledge in this area would post their ideas and advice.

18. We also need people who can effectively research
the information. I was surprised to see IBM on the bad list. Unless they've radically changed I would move them to not so bad. Here is a list of IBM employees who donated money, most to Dems.

http://www.opensecrets.org/indivs/search.asp?txtName=&txtState=&txtZip=&txtEmploy=IBM&txtCand=&txt2004=Y&txt2002=&txt2000=&txt1998=&txt1996=&txt1994=&txt1992=&txt1990=&txtSoft=N&Order=N&Cycles=1&Cycle1=2004&Cycle2=&Cycle3=&Page=5

Also, the unions are boycotting Dish, so that should be noted when recommending them.

6. professors can hurt right wing media with retirement fund retirement fund
I just sent this to my college instructor friends. Check who your retirement fund invests in too.

A surprising victory in the 2004 campaign came when Sinclair Broadcasting backed down from showing an anti-Kerry screed after people threatened to boycott their sponsors, and probably more importantly, institutional investors like the New York state retirement fund, questioned their actions. We need to do that on an even larger scale.

In addition to contacting our retirement fund, we need to find sponsors of Fox, Clear Channel, and Sinclair Broadcasting and let them know we intend to boycott their products (probably more potent than the boycott itself).

Contact our retirement fund, Calstrs at this link:

https://www.calstrs.com/contact/contactpso.aspx

I'm going to contact other unions and the state tomorrow.

Please forward this to any of your friends that might be interested.

See my note to them below.

I would like to know if our retirement is invested in any of the following corporations:

News corp (parent of Fox News)

Sinclair Broadcasting

Clear Channel

Time Warner (CNN)

GE (parent of NBC and MSNBC)

Disney (parent of ABC)

Viacom (parent of CBS)

These companies have actively worked against my personal economic interests by not seriously discussing President Bush's record, how his policies affect working people, and what serious scholars and experts think of his foreign and domestic policy.

I don't want my money supporting businesses that undermine democracy.

Some of these business even support partisan politics over profit as MSNBC did when it canceled Phil Donahue even though it was the highest rated show on their network.

Sinclair Broadcasting and Fox are the worst offenders, and if we have any money invested in them, I want it out NOW.

You will be hearing from other people on this, and I expect to see appropriate action.

Let them know what you think will be at least as effective as actually not buying their products.

9. Financial Services Supporting Bush
This is from CBS Marketwatch website 9Nov04, in an article discussing what companies stand to benefit most from *'s second term (that is, unless we can make it Kerry's first term) :

Social Security would be the perfect swan song for Bush. It presents an opportunity to put into action his own particular brand of political philosophy and at the same time contribute to the coffers of his biggest supporters. (Morgan Stanley (MWD: news, chart, profile), Merrill Lynch (MER: news, chart, profile), PricewaterhouseCoopers, UBS, Goldman Sachs (GS: news, chart, profile), MBNA Corp, Credit Suisse First Boston, Lehman Brothers (LEH: news, chart, profile), Citigroup (C: news, chart, profile) and Bear Stearns, in descending order, were Bush's 10 biggest campaign contributors.)

I told her I would no longer shop at Bon/Macy's even when they ran their sales because of their heavy GOP donations. Just maybe we can wake people up that we are not going to be sheeple Bush followers.

I will not do business with heavy Republican donors.

17. This is a good topic for a separate group
"DU Groups -- These are special member-suggested forums. They are different from regular forums in many ways, but the most important difference is that they will have specific mission statements and off-topic postings will be considered disruptive. "

Instruction are here:

How to request a group is here:

A number have people have already suggested a special boycott group if you go through the threads listed above.

23. Some businesses advertise if they are Democrat or Republican.
A few businesses in the Detroit area have a peace sign in their window. I try to patronize them when I can. Other businesses are obvious repug supporters with signs such as "LET'S ROLL", or "SUPPORT OUR TROOPS" as opposed to the more reasonable "SUPPORT OUR TROOPS BY BRINGING THEM HOME". Or the repug businesses may have a sign that says "UNITED WE STAND" as opposed to the more reasonable "UNITED WE STAND AGAINST THE WAR". There is no "united" when most of the world opposes the war and millions of people in the U.S. oppose the war.

A website specific to Ann Arbor, Michigan lists businesses that have a peace sign.

justpeaceinfo.org/stores-that-support-peace.html

If you live in a liberal community, look for signs in business windows or look for (or start up) a local website giving similar info for your community.
