PARTY!!!! August 28th, 2004 in NYC - come hang out with your DUers
We're still picking out a hotel and I need to confirm an approxiamete time that the Planned Parenthood March is done on Saturday, but I've decided to organize drinks for DUers who will be coming to NYC on the evening of August 28th at a yet to be named bar somewhere in the Penn Station/Madison Square Garden area. Hopefully I can get a tip on a nice bar that doesn't have a major restaurant crowd but plenty of room for whomever shows up for drinks.

Hope to see you all there

1. I need ideas how to get in and out of the city from New England
I'll be visiting in Portsmouth, NH, and I'm considering going to NYC for the protest and/or the DU event. Any thoughts on the best way to travel, and do you think it's plausible to just go for a day's events and head back later? Would some of the groups be using busses?

9. There are some options
You can drive, but parking is/will be a nightmare and very expensive. You could fly from Boston. There may also be an Amtrack option, but you will probably have to get to Boston.

4. right here!!!
http://www.ppnyc.org/homepage.html

We'll be organizing someplace with a group of folks from DU who can march together in the event. Bascially the march will go over the Brooklyn Bridge which I'm finding kinda neato to do!!!

5. I think I'd call that neato too!
Haven't thought of anything neato lately, but marching over the Brooklyn Bridge would be cool. :bounce:

Thanks sniffa for the bus tip. Perhaps South station?
I heard it's all new. Part of the "Big LONG Dig"

6. Chinatown bus
I'd take the bus---Acela and the regular Amtrak train always get delayed and whenever I've gone to NYC and there is something major going on the trains are the worst. The Chinatown bus is cheap, clean and new and blasts down 95 to NYC. I took it when I couldn't get a train (reluctantly) and later wondered why I spent almost 90.00 on Amtrak and spent 8 hours plus going to the city.

my .02 at any rate. I miss Boston and even P'mouth! (which also has a nice commuter bus to South STation so you can leave the car in NH at the station and not worry about it.

7. Another option
Park in New Haven or Stamford (you'll have to pay, of course) and take Metro-North to Grand Central, which is an easy subway ride or walk to just about anything. BUT it will probably cost more than the Chinatown bus.

I definitely don't recommend anything Amtrak, since it will go into Penn Station, which is underneath Madison Square Garden, where the convention will be held.

12. Planned Parenthood meetup details
They organizing the start of the protest at the Cadman Plaza in Brooklyn. Don't have much other details than that. I know I'll be there in a light purple tee-shirt I got from Planned Parenthood DE for the March back in APril. They'll start organizing at 11am and head over the bridge at noon. The event will last until 4pm.

14. Bars in the area
Immediatley around the Garden is practically a lost cause. Aside from you're chains like Houlihan's, Charlie O's or Fridays, you have smaller bars that fill up quickly (Blarney Stone on 33rd between 7/8th is probably the best).

But if you head uptown a bit into the 40s you get a lot better.
Connelly's on 47th has three floors, plenty of bar space (I believe it's just east of Broadway

Scruffy Duffy's on 8th is generally a fun, young, but not trendy crowd, 8th ave around 46th or so. You want to avoid ANYTHING in Times Square for the most part.

15. I'm in NYC too
I would suggest a good back up plan would be to meet at an East Side bar since the West Side bars are likely to be packed or inaccessible.
I can recommend Rocky O'Sullivans on Lexington between 28th and 29th. It's an Irish bar and fairly good for conversation. It's not all that large though. There's a larger place on Third Avenue between 19th and 20th, a place called Proof. Let me know where y'all are going to meet up in case I miss the PP march.

16. I just want a place where a bunch of us can stand around
and not be bothering the dinner crowd. Seriously - name me a place in that area (my hotel is in the Chelsea section) and that's where we'll meet for drinks!

Edited on Mon Aug-23-04 02:20 PM by Stephanie
Anybody been there? Just north of FIT? (Fashion Institute).

And there's another bar right next to it, I can't think of the name. Big roomy bar, nothing fancy.

I live in Chelsea, Lynne, so PM if I can help, and I'll give you my phone number so you have a contact in the neighborhood.

*edit* About the bar I mentioned:

You're staying on the West Side, in Chelsea. To get over to Lexington Avenue is quite a hike.

Lexington Avenue line -

There really isn't any train that's going to get you from Chelsea to there - you could take the crosstown bus on 23rd and then walk up.

26. And for those who don't know...
the actual stop lets you out on Park Avenue South; and then you walk a block east. Look for the McDonald's; it's east of the stop, so you'll know what direction to head in.
