PROTECTING THE RIGHT TO PROTEST AT THE RNC
For those of you who want to help in the legal support of the protests during the Republican National Convention (August 28-September 2), the National Lawyers Guild and the People’s Law Collective have some ideas for you.
District Attorney Morgenthau has estimated that there will be 1000 arrests every day over the two-week period before and during the RNC.
The NLG and PLC have a lot of experience in tracking arrestees, gathering evidence from Legal Observers and eye-witnesses, collecting video and photographs of arrests and police activity, and providing guidance and legal assistance to arrestees. We are committed to the goal that no arrestee is lost in the system or feels unsupported. If you want to help in providing legal support to the thousands coming to New York from all over the country to protest at the RNC, we can use your help.
Here’s how it will work: We will provide training for positions in the legal support network. The trainings will be given in August before the start of the RNC and will cover our documentation and support procedures from arrest to arraignment. Please read the
following staff position descriptions. If you are interested, send an email to rnclo@resist.ca.
Since we will need help over two weeks, you can help even if you plan to participate in a protest during the RNC. Although many of the jobs listed below will be at the Legal Office, others will be at the
courts or can be done from your home or office. For those of you who are night owls---we need you too! We’re hoping to have hundred’s of reliable volunteers.
