Democrats Lagging In House Recruitment
By Erin P. Billings and Chris Cillizza
Roll Call Staff
July 10, 2003

House Democrats entered the 108th Congress with an ambitious plan to “expand the playing field” for the 2004 elections, but the effort has yielded few top-flight challengers thus far, leaving some Members downcast about the party’s prospects.

1. DUers can win!
Given the power of the internet (as shown by moveon.org and the Dean campaign) I bet we could pull a few upsets. Especially if things continue to head south for the bush administration.

If anybody wants to run against Davis in Northern VA - I'll do my part to help out.

2. getting trashed
driven to bankruptcy and abandonned isn't so attractive to potential good guys with solid careers and resumes. Less dismay and fear and more support. Until the day comes when money is not an issue and charatcer assassination on behalf of lukewarm party support is not a hurdle, we may be overcrowded with talent. Now we need heros and though there are plenty they must rely on barebones grassroots in too many places.

The discouragement of loss even in a fake, rigged system breeds defeatism even when the people are just waiting there for something true and better. Good politics can reach them. Can money bury that every time?
