North Carolina Debate in Doubt
By Sarah Wheaton
The first debate in nearly two months is coming up in Philadelphia tomorrow, but it’s unclear how long we’ll have to go until the next one. There is a debate scheduled in North Carolina on April 27. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton has committed, but Senator Barack Obama is still checking his date book.
The North Carolina Democratic Party isn’t waiting for that key R.S.V.P. before inviting more guests. The party already has an entry form on its Web site for a drawing to receive tickets.
Mr. Obama originally agreed to a debate on April 19 in the state, but that date fell through. Jerry Meek, chairman of the North Carolina Democrats, said the party chose April 27 from the four choices presented by CBS, which is co-sponsoring and broadcasting the forum. Mr. Meek said the time, 8 p.m. on a Sunday, was appealing “given that the time slot after ‘60 Minutes’ is one of the most coveted time slots.”
Why the Obama campaign is balking on the date remains unclear. “I am always open to debates,” he told the Charlotte Observer on Friday, “but I think that obviously we’ve got to structure our campaign so that we’re reaching as many voters as possible, and it’s not clear that the April 27 debate will work for our schedule.”
