3. don't forget the Albany store front Mosque story
is it just me, or is there an outbreak of the appearance of terra-busting going on???

thank goodness it's not political ... harhar hardeharhar ... I'm sure when the Bu$h-Cheney admin. meet, they don't start off each meeting with how can we exploit this situation to maintain power and make money ......................

<< that might make a nice TV ad ... a conference room of Bu$h-Cheney officials planning terra, energy, economy; and, the meeting kicks off with: how can we exploit this to our advantage and make our pies higher >>

Albany store-front "mosque" under investigation for a over a year? since they apparently were of no immediate threat danger, I expect the 'news' is just breaking for the GOP convention ... but, what do I know ... conjecture is becoming a hobby ...

Congress had better allocate billions more to GOP donors, er, defense contractors ASAP or it'll be John Kerry's fault. What's in inventory which can already do the job?

Alleged Missile Plot Uncovered in N.Y.

August 5, 2004 08:55 AM EDT

WASHINGTON - Two leaders of a mosque in Albany, N.Y., were arrested on charges stemming from an alleged plot to help a man they thought was a terrorist purchase a shoulder-fired missile, federal authorities said Thursday.

The men have ties to a group called Ansar al-Islam, which has been linked to the al-Qaida terror network, according to two federal law enforcement authorities speaking on condition of anonymity.

The investigation has been going on for a year and is not related to the Bush administration's decision earlier this week to raise the terror alert level for certain financial sector buildings in New York and Washington, the officials said.

The Homeland Security Department has contracted with three companies to develop plans for anti-missile systems that could be used to defend U.S. commercial planes against shoulder-fired rockets.

Pakistan: Suspect Had Photos of Heathrow

August 5, 2004 08:02 AM EDT

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan - Pakistan gave British authorities images of London's Heathrow Airport and other sites that were found on the computers of two al-Qaida fugitives arrested last month, intelligence officials said Thursday.

The officials, however, could not confirm reports in British newspapers that the information helped lead to the arrests of about a dozen suspected terrorists in Britain this week.

Pakistan produces the goods, again
By Syed Saleem Shahzad

KARACHI - When US Central Command commander General John Abizaid visited Islamabad last week, his first priority was not Pakistan sending troops to Iraq, but the arrest of high-value al-Qaeda targets.

"Al Qaeda operators being held in Pakistan until 'right moment' (election time) Pakistan produces the goods, again --by Syed Saleem Shahzad "Security experts close to the corridors of power in Pakistan tell Asia Times Online that as the November presidential elections in the US draw closer, more such dramatic - and timely - arrests can be expected. The announcement of Tanzanian al-Qaeda operative, Ahmed Khalfan] Ghailani's arrest coincided with the Democratic Party's convention in Boston... ... under intense pressure from the US, Pakistan has handed over as many as 350 suspected al-Qaeda operators into US custody. Most have been low-ranking, but some important names are, according to Asia Times Online contacts, being held in Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) safe houses to be presented at the right moment. The Bush regime is preparing for an 'October Surprise'."

4. Thanks for the links and excerpts.
Random points in no particular order:

__Though the timing of the breaking news stories is intriguing, I do like the fact that obviously there are solid, on the street investigations going on. Note to Bushy and Rummy: It's not always necessary to bomb and torture to get information. There always are alternatives.

__As has been pointed out in follow-up stories on last Sunday's pulse-raising announcement by Ridge, sometimes the worrying "images" found in computer files are photos and diagrams of airports, buildings, etc that are in the public domain and fairly easy to find online. Any savvy traveler going to/through an airport for the first time probably checks out the airport website beforehand to find out the relative locations of gates, rental car counters, parking decks, etc. The point here is that the finding of such material on computers does not indicate a major security breach or intensive surveillance.

__I am impressed by some people's shopping skills -- a shoulder fired missile! Wow! And I've been looking for over 2 years to find a replacement for the missing doohickey for the outdoor spigot.
