AP Gets New Bush Military Records as Major 'Globe' Report Appears

By E & P Staff

Published: September 08, 2004 10:00 AM EDT

NEW YORK After nearly a month of focus on Senator John Kerry's war record in Vietnam, the media glare returned today to President George W. Bush's stateside service, and reputed gaps in it.

The Associated Press, after being told by the White House in February that it had released all of the President's military records, inexplicably got a new batch of documents from the Pentagon on Tuesday. Nicholas Kristof, columnist for The New York Times, who had not previously written on this subject, nailed the first major interview with Bob Mintz, an Air National Guard lieutenant colonel who claimed he never saw Bush report for duty in Alabama.

And the Boston Globe, which has also at times been harshly critical of Senator Kerry, produced a major report by its Spotlight Team, concluding that Bush "fell well short of meeting his military obligation."

All this is in advance of a much-ballyhooed CBS "60 Minutes " interview scheduled for tonight with Ben Barnes, former lieutenant governor of Texas, who says he arranged for Bush's entry into the Guard in 1968.

6. Barnes on "60 Minutes" TONIGHT
There's been some confusion about whether this interview will air Wed. 9/8 or Sun. 9/12. It's tonight, 9/8:

11. People do CARE,
most will if they conduct there lives in a truthfull manner. This goes to his credability. IF theses stories are true(and they are) then it proves that bush has been telling lives for thirty years. THAT is a big deal.

12. Bush is running on his "leadership" and character
Yes, I think people care. This shows his character - he can't finish anything he starts! He was 27 years old in the year in question. Twenty seven and irresponsible. Contrast that to Kerry.

He deserted his guard duty and went on to another failure - campaigning for a Senate candidate who ended up losing the election.

15. Medals don't lie
and I believe the men who were on the boat with Kerry. The veterans speaking out against Kerry are lead and funded by someone who is carrying a 30 year grudge - O'Neill. Why does he have a grudge? Someone should ask him.

It still goes to the foundation and character of this man. He hasn't done much with his life that wasn't funded by his father and his cronies.

17. 60 minutes interview
Actually watched the interview with Ben Barnes. CBS finally grew some balls and asked a couple tough questions of Scott McCellan. Of course they held the line and didn't get off message. It will be interesting to see if this gets as much traction as the swift boat ads did. Should know by the time I read the Sacrametno Bee tomorrow morning. Will Fox cover this? DOOOOH as Homer J. would say.:bounce:
