Air America – the politically liberal radio network that arrived in San Diego a month ago – couldn't have come at a better time.
Since Aug. 23, the Republican National Convention has come and gone, the 2004 presidential campaign has picked up speed, and the radio airwaves warfare between the political right and left has intensified.
KLSD/AM 1360 (formerly KPOP) is the Clear Channel Communications outlet that carries Air America here. Kudos to Clear Channel, whose founders and top brass are Republicans, for bringing Air America to GOP registration-dominated San Diego County.
Clear Channel suits say KLSD came into being as competition to KPBS/FM 89.5, the National Public Radio and Public Radio International station based at San Diego State University. That's odd, considering KPBS doesn't participate in radio listenership ratings compiled quarterly by the Arbitron Co. We'll never really know if KLSD has stolen any audience from KPBS. Ironically, KPBS/FM has run promos for KLSD/Air America.
