What do you think about this 24 hour news irony?
As I was watching MSNBC during the late morning today with very little "news" to report...I was surprised at how during an interview of some folks, the guy says....Ok we gotta wrap this up we're about out of time...and then they go to something like Sausage Assault by Pirate or whatever.

Of course, FoxNews is the best at portraying this "BREATHLESS, hyperventilating coverage of some minor local issue that has an audience interest rating of about -6 and then SWIFTLY moving onto.....the top of the batting order for the day. ad infinitum. same stories regurgitated in the most superficial ways in the next hours.

They never sit down and delve into a subject...even though they have a huge gap in the amount of content to fill those 24 hours.

I know my observations are nothing new, but it just hit me more directly today that it is a shame the "ALL NEWS" channels actually are far, far behind channels providing a wide variety of programming and fitting their news into an hour here or there through the day. IT is hard to get better than The Jim Lehrer News Hour or Nightline for in depth coverage.

Perhaps it is because people feel some deepseated desire and realization that they need to be informed in our busy society but they are too lazy to pick up the deeper aspects of current events so these stations just target the passing glance person who flips through...watches 5 minutes or so and moves on....

I just feel it is a real shame, and I believe a liberal cable news network could make great headway by NOT doing what these people do. Of course, I'm not in mass media or advertising so perhaps this is just the way to make money.

But it certainly isn't the way to inform, and their rush to finish a segment has NOTHING to do with lack of air time and everything to do with going to the next item before audience attention span checks out and changes channel.
