Ted Nugent Concert
I had the bizarre experience of attending the Ted Nugent concert last night. He had a free show at the Kentucky State Fair in Louisville. His music was as awsome as it was decades ago, but crazy Uncle Ted is as crazy as ever.
He kept screaming his mantra "NO SH*T". After the first three times it became annoying to me. He must have shouted it several times during the concert. This wasn't an adults only show. People wandered in from the fairgrounds with their kids. (I wouldn't take a child to see Ted Nugent, but hey-- this IS the State Fair).

He dedicated one of his first songs to our victory over evil in Iraq. He specifically heaped praise on George W. Bush.

After one song, he started listing people who could "kiss his ass", including the Dixie Chicks, the United Nations, Jesse Jackson, and the whole world. Apparently Ted feels that the whole world is wrong and he and George W. Bush are right.

And then there was the racism. He repeated his comment about "Jap guitars" that got him in trouble a few weeks ago. He strangely referred to himself as "Black Entertainer of the Year", and (as stated above) attacked Jesse Jackson. He called the French sissies. He said that New York's power was out because of all the "blood-suckers" who live there. (Hey Ted, why was the power out in Detroit?) He performed his "Great White Buffalo" number in a full Indian Head-dress. I'm sure I missed a few others.

I guess what I was most disappointed about was Ted's disrespect for the Flag and for the National Anthem. He had a giant flag stretched across the back of the stage, which would have been an acceptable display of patriotism, if he hadn't used it as a background for a large "Ted Nugent.com" sign hanging right in front of it. He is a lot like Bush in that regard, using the flag as a prop to promote himself, rather than as a symbol for our Nation. What is worse, is that at the end of one of his songs, the band broke into a rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner. We in the audience stood, took off our hats, and put our hands over our hearts. Ted repeatedly shouted his mantra: "NO SH*T", several times during the rendition. There's some respect for you, shouting vulgarities at a crowd while playing their National Anthem. Here's an idea, Ted: You're a rock star. How about SINGING the Star-Spangled Banner next time?

Ted is a national treasure. He is very talented as a rock performer, and his songs stir fond memories for me. He was an innovator, and has a place in the pantheon, etc. It's just a shame he has no brain left.

3. Talent

Give me the brilliance of Alex Skolnick (jazz, metal), Jason Becker (metal), Al DiMeolaor Pat Metheny (jazz) anyday of the week.

Nugent is borish as a player and especially as a song-writer. His lyrics are as insipid as anything that has ever existed.

His one claim to fame is Cat Scratch Fever, which is like AC/DC...Its lowest common denominator party rock that is fun to jam to, but ultimately leaves the listener empty inside.

4. Well sure...
I saw Pat Metheny in concert, and I was blown away. I enjoy all kinds of music. But there is a soft spot in my heart (and possibly in my brain) for party rock. And you guys forgot to mention "Stranglehold", which he hit perfectly. It was just uncomfortable watching him scream his nonsense to an agreeing crowd.

I agree...Party rock like Nugent and AC/DC and others serves a purpose. Don't get me wrong.

When talking about virtuosity I'd much rather hear those other guys. Nugent plays ok, but I don't hear a sincere intelligence in his playing.

It's hard to explain. Technically, Angus Young of AC/DC isn't any better than Nugent, but I "get" his soloing. The fact Nugent hasn't made many hits isn't my issue with him...It's the fact he just hasn't made a lot of great music. Oh sure...There are some songs that are pretty good, but does HE have a Zep 4? Does he have a Master of Puppets? Does he have a S.Peppers? Does he have a Dark Side of the Moon?

Combining this with the fact he's repulsive as a human being means Ill never see him in concert. But Im glad you had fun...

25. There is more substance in Angus Young's little finger
than there is in ALL of Ted Nugent. Yes AC/DC is party music, but don't lump them in with that Nugent crap.

6. "Ted is a national treasure." I hope you are on drugs to write that
Edited on Fri Aug-15-03 02:17 PM by roughsatori
I like some of his songs but he is hardly innovative. But if you seriously think Ted Nugent is a "national treasure" I can't take you seriously.

He is innovative in that he proves one need not be a drug addicted rock star to be a ridiculous caricature of oneself. He is a tired cliché.

I am completely in favor of the 2nd amendment. I fail to see how that makes anyone "special." He pats himself on the back about guns, as if that makes him a revolutionary of some sort--it is just a promotional tool. And over the years he has started to sound dumber and dumber.

7. I got his autograph
When he came to Tulsa for a book signing and a concert. It's sort of a hobby - when a conservative blowhard comes to town, I get his autograph and a picture of him and me while I make a face (Buchanan, Jim Inhofe, and Nugent so far). I gave the book (Kill It and Grill It, I think) to my brother-in-law, who is pretty conservative as well as a hunter - both gun and bow. A few months later I asked him how he liked it, and he said that he thinks the recipes are good, but he thought that it was a humor book just from the rambling way Ted writes. He thought that until he saw a hunting show of Ted's on ESPN2 (I think). He said, "Then I realized that's how he talks in real life. It's annoying, and they show more of him getting to where they're going than they do hunting. He's all talk and no action."

Just came out of his cave. Dude as as close to a neanderthal as we have alive today. Hell, he could be a clone from one for all I know.

Only difference is the neanderthal didn't know any better. Nugent is a CLASS A Redneck. Whatever he says, I'll do the opposite. Whatever he believes, if I'm on the other side, then I know I'm fine. If I agree w/ him on ANYTHING, I better check myself.

26. I also hate hunting
Edited on Fri Sep-12-03 12:13 PM by kwolf68

And I study animals and am in grad school w/ the hopes of being a research curator for felines with limited genetic variation one day...

However, there IS an actual viable way to HUNT that EVEN I would agree with, but it would never pass.

I can expand a long way on the theory, but the pro-hunting people suggest that because natural predators are no longer with us, then man needs to hunt would-be prey for these predators.

Without predation, the ecosystem is thrown out of whack. So on that very base argument I do agree with them.

HOWEVER, they are wrong to suggest their form of hunting is a reasonable replacement for natural predation. As we all learn in Ecology 101 (or 307 in my case) predators do a service to the species they are preying on by taking the sick, old, injured and yes...even young. This benefits the species as opposed to taking say...a healthy 4 year old buck with a 10 or 12 point rack.

Further, the hunting season (for deer at least) should not discriminate versus Does. The hunting season should take about the same numbers of each sex. However, because hunters want big racks (to make up for their little brains) the wildlife management officials have these long buck seasons and very short doe seasons.

This balance leaves the deer population "thinking" it has a more severe under-population than it really does and seeks to correct itself thus perpetuating the over-population.

This over-population of course leads to car crashes with deer, problem deer in gardens and flower beds, etc...giving sympathy to the pro-hunting forces who seek the support of people not schooled in the ritualistic slaughter of innocent life forms.

--From there the agenda of the sport-hunting industry/movement gets more sickening when you analyze other situations such as the Western Parts of the nation with the Big Horn Sheep/Mountain Lion connection, etc.

This is the thing that appalls me about hunting. Not necessarily the actual killing of an animal. I love animals. I chase squirrels out of the road in Arlington, Va as I walk to work so they won't get run over...However, killing an animal to eat it isn't necessarily evil or inhumane. Animals kill each other to eat each other. What drives me crazy about these people is their self-revelry about how they are the real conservationists, that their hunting licenses save the environment and they are “only” providing a service to nature.

This selfish and hypocritical pile of dog shit masks the fact most of these people were bread to hunt, most grew up doing it, being desensitized to the actual killing of an animal. They use radios, dogs, trucks, scents, sounds and even baited fields to pacify their thirst for blood and their masochistic desire to kill something which he holds power over.

One need only look at the rise of canned hunting operations, bear baiting and other baited fields to see it isn’t about “sport” for most(for proof of this fact I submit the NRA and nearly every other hunting organization who has LOBBIED against banning canned hunting operations) of these people. What they want to do is kill and animal, stuff it and stick it on the wall.

In the early 1990s, hunting had a reputation on par with a drug dealer or prostitute. The myriad of mythical propaganda disseminated by the multi-billion dollar gun and hunting industry has worked hard to return credibility to a group of people who quite honestly don’t deserve it.

10. A lot of his shows got canceled after racist comments.
I forgot the details, but while on a radio show, he said something about how his American made guitar sounded better than any "jap" guitar. The DJ's tried to simmer him down, but he started whining about how these were "just words" and how words can't hurt people. Then he started giving examples of some of these "words". You can imagine. Thus a lot of his shows got called off.
As I stated in a previous post, he made sure to repeat his "jap guitar" comment at the concert I attended, along with other racially charged comments.
But don't diss the KY State Fair. We also have Joan Jett and the Blackhearts!

If he hates "Jap" stuff, then I can only believe he not only thinks like the dark ages, but lives like it.

Is there ANY appliance (other than Amana refrigs) not made in Japan?

What the hell is wrong w/ this nation when Nugent, Ann Coutler and Mike Savage are asked to promote their verbal vomit?

13. Nugent on Conan O'brien
A while back I saw Ted on the Conan O'Brien show. He was playing with the band and he kept doing these stupid guitar solos and basically came off as a baffoon.

At one point during some cross chatter Nugent said something about god and god loving him or something...can't remember exactly but conan sort of looked at the camera and said offhandedly something like ... ohhh scarily self loving.

I know that's not it exactly but that's the gist of it anyway. I laughed out loud at that. But, I laugh out loud a lot at O'Brien. He has the best comedy talk show on. Leno is lame and a conservative joke and Letterman is cool but getting old. O'Brien is very funny. I think The Simpsons was at its best when he was a writer there too.

Just A side note but Ted also had a hit with "Rock And Roll Hoochie Coo"

His music isn't bad for the occaisonal good songs he does.

By the way on Conan the remark went -

Conan: Ted Nugent, god bless that man.

and Ted replies

Ted: He does.

Conan: An eery amount of self confidence (or something for that last part).

Ted has no credibility in today's music scene. Sure he had a hit or two when he was younger, and some of his songs may have been palatable. But as a guitarist, you can only mask a lack of talent with copious volume, guitar masturbation, and penis and/or vagina references in your songs for so long.

His usefulness to the music industry has been diminished for years - he just refuses to see it. The only crowd that he is popular with fits him fine. They are the ones that see life the way he does - simple, rigid, and unchanging. "If the world doesn't see it the way I do, fuck 'em!"

This mindset(although the theme of the current administration's foreign policy as well) will soon relegate one to the ranks of those dinosaurs that sit on their front porch, bitching about how bad things are now, how great they were then, and snatching any baseball's of the neighborhood kids when they happen to land in his yard.

Playing free shows at state fairs? How embarrassing. He should have stayed with Damn Yankees. He at least partially revived a flagging career.

Edited - shitty spelling.

If you want an indication of how far the prestige of hunting and shooting "sports" have slipped in this country, consider this: 50 years ago, hunting and shooting were represented by such luminaries as Ernest Hemingway and Clark Gable. Now their most prominent exponent is....Ted Nugent.

For further evidence of this metastasis, venture down to the Gun Dungeon, aka the Justice/Public Safety forum, here at DU. Check out the comments of the pro-gun radicals who have set up shop down there; non-stop talk about assault rifles and pistols, virtually nothing about traditional hunting weapons. The other day, these guys set up not one, not two, but three separate threads demanding that the visually impaired have full and unfettered access to guns. Small wonder that Nugent is viewed as some sort of god by such people....

Way overrated. He's another typical obnoxious blowhard the right trots out as if to say to people "See, we can be hip also!". In fact, I think he's something of an embarresment to them as well. His hyprocrisy with their lauded family values platform is a freakin joke. He's been sued for child support more times than I can count and he's had sex with every groupie in the country.

When you get right down to it, he's not even that talented. His bandmate and co-writer actually wrote and sang every hit and semi-hit he's ever had. And has never gotten any credit for it except a tiny blurb buried in the liner notes. His live act consists mainly of his 20 min. guitar solos and him screaming absurdities at the audience. Sheesh, any numbskull who can play guitar half-ass can do that.

washed up has been rock stars who are trying to reinvent themselves. I remember when he was just a "kill em and grill em" has been rock star who hadn't had a hit in a decade (this was in the 80's). Now he has embraced the insipid right wing mantra's of many low intelligent white men in their early 20's in the hope of reengergizing his career.

I saw him a couple of years ago during Kiss's "farewell tour". He sang his "kiss my ass" love song to Bill/Hillary, Al Gore, Jesse Jackson, and Janet Reno.
