would be worth today?

There are at least two ways I want to look at this:

1) If you took $10,000 in 1972 and invested it moderately (say 5-7%?) what would that be worth today.

2) The value of $10,000 (purchasing power) in 1972 was greater than it is today. What would an equivalent amount of 'purchasing power' be in today's dollars?

I'm not very good at this sort of thing, but knowing this info or where I can figure it out would be extremely helpful. Thanks in advance for any help/advice.

on edit: Duh@me...I just realized I can figure out the answer to my #1 question myself. *sheepish nevermind* on that one...

1. in 1971
My parents bought a "fixer-upper" house for $9,000.

They say today that their house is worth between $50,000- $60,000.

I don't know that for sure...that is the figure that they think it is worth, not an appraisers.

3. $100 in 1972 is $448 in 2004, so $10,000 then would be $44,800 now

4. Try this site

I hope this helps. As far as real estate you really can't calculate what a house is worth that way. It's market value at the time of sale. Makes no difference if you bought for $10,000 at any particular time, the only thing that matters is what the market is at when you sell. Could be a hundred thousand this year but next year maybe 70,000.

1972 - $10000.00 = 2004 - $45239.23
