Two New Red Tides Off NE China - 2,000 Square Miles In Area
BEIJING — Two giant toxic red tides engulfed parts of the sea off northeastern China over the weekend, and officials were monitoring seafood for contamination, the China Daily reported on Wednesday.

Marine experts said the red tides would grow, but so far shellfish and other seafood were safe to eat despite the algae blooms, the newspaper quoted the State Oceanic Administration as saying.

EDIT

The newspaper said one of the blooms emerged on Friday near the mouth of the Yellow River and covered about 1,850 sq km (710 sq miles) of the Bohai Sea. The other blanketed an area covering about 3,200 sq km (1,240 sq miles) near the northern port city of Tianjin.

The newspaper said the red tides were part of a rising trend, and in May China's coastal areas were hit by 34 outbreaks affecting more than 10,000 sq km (3,860 sq miles), a rise of 3,000 sq km (1,160 sq miles) from the year before."

2. Toxic blue-green algae in Finland...
Edited on Sat Jun-19-04 07:24 AM by Combat Honey
...almost killed my brothers dog. The dog had drunk water from the Baltic Sea and after a few months suffered from severe liver condition. It's never gonna be totally healthy and has to have medication for the rest of its life.

Blue-green algae blooms are a major problem here in the Baltic, and they are mainly due to euthrophication. Though there have been big blooms already in the 1700'th century they have got worse lately. Swimming or diving in the Baltic Sea just ain't the same any more. The visibility while diving may as little as half a meter!

I wonder how bad these blooms will have to get before actions are taken to try to return the ecosystem to a more healthy state...!

We SUCK as a species...
