French ski area victim of Global Warming?
Perhaps you know the story. I found an English version here: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19851586/

"The city council of Abondance — its name a cruel reminder of the generous snowfall it once enjoyed — voted last month 9-6 to shut down the ski area that has been its economic raison d'etre for more than 40 years. The reason: not enough snow.

Abondance is the French Alps' first ski station to fall apparent victim to global warming. It will almost certainly not be the last."
...
"The Alps as a whole, which pull in about 70 million tourists every year primarily for winter sports, are "particularly sensitive" to climate change, according to a study last winter by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development."

Now I think it's time the deniers of G.W. start giving evidence. I posted something like this in the recent past.
The perspective about G.W. is that people denouncing cases are always forced to produce evidence twice as necessary.
The deniers just say NO.

I think the perspective should reverse: let's ask evidence for denying.

I'm a visitor of the Dolomiti ski area in North-Eastern Italy. On the Val di Fassa (Fassa Valley) there have been problems with snow. At lower stations you may witness lack of snow even in December and January. These are ski areas that have never witnessed such problems.

I think they'll have to turn to summer tourism to save their economy.
I hope Abondance will do it straight. A marketing plan may save the area turning it into a Summer resort.

Naturally, this won't solve the G.W. problem. To whom who believe it!

1. Yeah we are also equally screwed in Germany
The lower elevations in Bavaria received no snow last year, and it was not cold enough to even MAKE snow. I wonder what this winter will bring? The snow that fell in Austria (higher elevations) provided minimal conditions at best, and was so chewed up by those looking for any action, the season was a total washout.

2. Artificial snow for the Marcialonga cross-country race
Edited on Thu Aug-02-07 08:52 AM by demoleft
For the cross-country ski race MARCIALONGA DI FIEMME E FASSA artificial snow was used at lower stations, from Cavalese up to Predazzo and Moena. A long white snake of snow in the faded green (see here for the altitudes http://www.marcialonga.it/mlff/XC/10/7/ )

In Val di Fiemme "reliable artificial snow machinery" is clearly and honestly said to keep good chance to perform during the whole winter. And I see the Valley is candidate for 2013 World Championship!

If France starts to have problems at its heights, what may be of the the Fassa/Fiemme Valley (1000-1500 mt)?
You are right: what will this winter bring?

3. Bavarian and Austrian ski areas are particularly affected by
Föhn winds, which have, in my estimation, occured more and more frequently over the past 20 years or so.
