Ontario to approve Great Lakes wind power

Several offshore projects are waiting in the wings

January 15, 2008
Tyler Hamilton
Energy Reporter

Ontario is preparing to lift a controversial moratorium on the development of offshore wind projects in the Great Lakes that has been in place for nearly 14 months, the Toronto Star has learned.

A Ministry of Natural Resources official says the department is "getting ready" to make an announcement and that new minister Donna Cansfield is "anxious to demonstrate leadership in the area."

Jamie Rilett, a spokesperson in Cansfield's office, confirmed that the ministry is currently revisiting the moratorium. He said a decision would be made "shortly."

1. Leaders in Cleveland are trying to bootstrap a business here
No wind turbines have ever been built in fresh water. Ice destroys frail structures in Lake Erie. Blowing ice scrapes the bottom of the lake and may rip up the conductors.

And doesn't get much ice even around the shoreline,

at least on the Canadian side anyways.

I've lived in Toronto, Oakville and Hamilton for a total of over 35 years, and never seen much ice around the shoreline, let alone floating around further out.

Lake Erie average depth is around 60 feet, while Lake Ontario is around 280 feet.

Lost more info on the Great Lakes here

and HEY!

Oakville is my home town, and at one time had the highest income per capita in the province.

But spell-checker doesn't like the way we spell it

humph

and by the way - according to Wiki

y'all got over half a dozen Oakvilles down there

time to update ur Speller Pages
