By ANNE PAINE • Gannett Tennessee • August 10, 2008
TVA shut down two of its nuclear reactors after malfunctions at Watts Bar and Browns Ferry plants this past week and cut power production back at two others to keep from overheating the Tennessee River.
The problems appeared as the agency considers plans to increase electricity rates by 10 to 20 percent, blaming skyrocketing costs of coal and natural gas and insufficient rainfall for its hydroelectric plants.
Nuclear power is looked to as a major component of the public power producer's long-term solution for a reliable energy source. An environmental leader questioned the wisdom of that on Friday.
"Hello! It's August again, and TVA is having to cut back at Browns Ferry again because the Tennessee River has become too warm," said Don Safer, board chairman of Tennessee Environmental Council in Nashville.
"And they want to put more reactors upstream of Browns Ferry at Bellefonte."
