Decade of drought leaves two lakes, Powell and Mead, in same boat
In 1999, lakes Mead and Powell were close to full.

Today, the combined storage in the two reservoirs stands at about 55 percent of capacity.

"Think about it cumulatively. Without Powell, there would be no Mead right now," Mulroy said. "You've lost a reservoir."

1. California is above normal for rainfall as of last week...
And with global warming, which puts a lot more moisture in the air, we could see a rise in many of our wanting lakes. Mono Lake will absolutely feel an increase... the snowfall in the Sierras is over 127% greater than normal... and they don't get "real" snow until January/February. There was a lot of snow left on the northern slopes in August this year.

2. Yes, but it'll take years of above average rainfall to fill our
California reservoirs. And unfortunately, Mono lake water isn't drinkable. It's about two and a half times saltier and eighty times more alkaline than the ocean.

3. We are heading into many, many years of above average rainfall...
That's all part of the global climate changes we're beginning to see right now.

I'm not suggesting we waste water... I think we should be corralling all this water that's pouring down on So Cal right now!

6. I don't know, but my guess is LA takes almost all of the
water run off from the Eastern Sierras and Owens Valley for at least as far north as Bishop, and maybe farther.
