Japan Times: Rules set for disposal of hot debris
Rules set for disposal of hot debris
Kyodo

Burned or incombustible debris in Fukushima Prefecture can be buried at waste dumps if it is emitting less radiation than the legal limit, the Environment Ministry said.

Guidelines issued Sunday cover debris in coastal and central areas of the prefecture, except for zones where people were evacuated due to radioactive fallout from the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant.

The ministry set the limit at 8,000 becquerels per kilogram of radioactive cesium-134 and -137 so people working at disposal sites will not be exposed above the limit of 1 millisievert per year.

While debris with 8,000 becquerels or less of cesium can be buried at controlled disposal sites and separately from general garbage, rubble above the limit will be kept at a facility shielded by concrete walls for the time being while the ministry considers how to dispose of it.

Incinerators to burn...

1. You'd think that the nuclear industry would have figured out what to do with
cesium-134 and137 before they started building the damn reactors to begin with but I guess that would be asking too much from them. The whole part about PSO attempt to shove a nuck plant down our throats years ago that was the final nail in that coffin was when we started to inquire about the waste and what their plan was. At first it was stammer then obfuscate then out right lie. 60 damn years later and they still have no idea as to how to safely deal with the waste. Hell whats happening in Japan now is a perfect example as to their not knowing what to do when something inevitably does go wrong. Irregardless of the why it went wrong the part that stick in my craw is they are just playing it by the seat of their pants today without any plan at all. First they try this then when that doesn't work they try something else all the while they're poisoning the earth we live on. Its not like we can just up and move to another planet or something
