Global Warming Threatens Home of the Dancing Deer
Global Warming Threatens Home of the Dancing Deer

By: Rang7 Team October 11, 2011

The side effects of global warming seem to be felt by one and all. The newest victim is the Sangai and its habitat, Keibul Lamjao National Park in Manipur.

Keibul Lamjao National Park located in Bishnupur district of Manipur in North East India is a part of Loktak Lake, the largest freshwater lake in eastern India, and has the distinction of being the only floating park in the world.

Global warming which has resulted in rising temperatures and other climatic changes has resulted in the Keibul Lamjao National Park being vulnerable almost to the point of extinction. This is because phumdis which are floating decomposed plant materials and the main substance which forms the National Park, may increase their decomposition rate due to rising temperatures.

Keibul Lamjao National Park, an integral part of the Loktak Lake, is at least three fourth covered with phumdis. The park was declared as sanctuary in 1966 and a National Park in 1977 and is home to the endangered species of brow antlered deer locally called Sangai or Dancing Deer.
