Water demand 'will outstrip supply'

(UKPA)

Businesses, farmers and householders need to take steps to become more water-efficient as climate change and population growth increase pressures on resources and lead to more droughts, two reports have warned.

Demand for water is likely to outstrip supply across the whole of England if the system currently used to manage water is not radically overhauled, the reports published by the Environment Agency revealed.

The reports also warned that changes in rainfall and increases in temperature could lead to iconic fish species, such as Atlantic salmon and brown trout, being lost.

The two reports published to support the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) Water White Paper, Water for Life, found that droughts of 12 to 18 months in duration are likely to become more common in the future.
