Know anyone that's doing this? Re: Homemade biodiesel
www.biodieselsolutions.com

They have a machine you can buy for just a few thousand dollars that they claim can make biodiesel for 70ish cents a gallon. This could pay for itself quickly for farmers who go through diesel like nothing. Anyone tried this or know anyone that has? I've heard guys in Missouri are, but don't really know.

1. All you need is an electric H2O heater and some used cooking oil.
the only danger is dealing with the Methanol/Lye mix. The small amount 3gal of Methanol to 15 - 18 gal of oil, helps to get the glycerin out of the oil and gives it a lower melting point. This keeps the oil more viable as a fuel at lower temps. I have made my own but now I buy Yellow Label BioDiesel and mix it 50/50 with diesel in my TDI. I have done this for the past three months with no change in engine performance...

2. Here's a book on it.

Linktv had a show that went over the process. A guy was making it, and showed how his evolution of the process went.

I've also seen posts in forums where people are doing it. But I don't recall which forums, or what they had to say. I'm braindead from Bush.

Edited on Wed May-24-06 12:42 PM by durrrty libby
I would love to do this and have been looking around my neighborhood for someone to help me do the set up.

No luck yet, but I want to make this happen.

Edited to add

An online buddy sent me some info.

Part of the forum is about making biodiesel, the other part is about running SVO

6. It might be a good idea to try it on an old engine
instead of pouring it in a hundred thousand dollar tractor. Eveyone seems to think it works just fine, but still. . . . . . . . . . .

7. There are grease clubs. These people are passionate about this.
But yeah, I wouldn’t pour something in my precious engine, unless I had confidence it.

The enticement of free oil gets very tempting with the constant cost increases for fuel.

My last diesel engine lasted for 300,000 mi. I loved it so much; I replaced the engine rather than junking a 20 year old vehicle.

8. Here's a UK DIY set of instructions / guide
http://www.schnews.org.uk/diyguide/howtomakebiodiesel.htm

I don't know the ins and outs of this subject but my understanding is that homemade stuff is better suited to older engines.
