Protect Wolves in Idaho and Wyoming...
This is outrageous! The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has released its proposal to strip wolves of crucial Endangered Species Act protections in Idaho and parts of Wyoming. Both states are now preparing massive wolf eradication plans, and hundreds of wolves could be killed.

Send a message to Dirk Kempthorne, U.S. Secretary of the Interior, who oversees the Fish and Wildlife Service.
http://action.defenders.org/rockymountainoutrage2

Both Idaho and Wyoming have begun actively planning efforts to kill hundreds of wolves. As many as two-thirds of the wolves in Wyoming could be killed. And as many as 60 of Idaho's 71 wolf packs could be eradicated!

The government once nearly allowed our Northern Rocky Mountain wolves to be shot, harassed and poisoned into extinction. We can't let that happen again.

Please send Interior Secretary Kempthorne a message about the importance of protecting our wolves right now:

These wolves are in trouble. I hope you'll help...

Norton, Kempthorne Sign Agreement Turning Over Most Management of Wolves In Idaho to the State

(BOISE, Idaho) – Secretary of the Interior Gale Norton and Idaho Governor Dirk Kempthorne today signed a Memorandum of Agreement transferring most of the responsibility for managing gray wolves in central Idaho from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to state wildlife officials.

The agreement covers the management of the experimental, non-essential population of gray wolves south of Interstate 90, an area that encompasses most of the state. Wolves north of Interstate 90 are protected under the Endangered Species Act as an endangered species. The Service is completing the application process for a permit to allow the state to manage wolves in the Idaho Panhandle north of Interstate 90.

Populations of wolves in Idaho have flourished since the Service introduced them in the state in 1995. In 2004, there were at least 422 wolves in Idaho, including 27 breeding pairs, nearly three times the recovery goal.

Idaho will manage the species in accordance with a conservation and management plan developed by the state and approved by the Service in anticipation of removal of wolves in the northern Rockies from the list of threatened and endangered species protected under the Endangered Species Act.

4. If I remember correctly, it was Kempthorne who couldn't wait
to shoot a few himself.

It's going to be a tough fight, no doubt about it.

6. Our current governor, "Butch" (really!) Otter wants the first tag
Wolves are like furry jihadists if you listen to some in this state.

Not everybody feels that way though (letter to the Idaho Statesman newspaper):

Barbaric redneck

Recently I have learned about the governor's stand on wolves. It seems that our governor cannot wait for the opportunity to shoot and kill some beautiful wolves.

Sure, there is a downside to the Idaho wolf population at present; however, this is nature at work. Wolves are a part of a delicate ecosystem that may take decades to balance. These canines are not ours to interfere with.

I am disappointed in Gov. Otter, for he is telling our children to disrespect Idaho's stunning wildlife. In my opinion, we have a barbaric redneck representing our state. Should we start shooting humans for sport because the Earth is over-populated?

What kind of man is Butch Otter? I have a pretty good idea. I know many readers do, too.

7. Ah...Butch-er
Thanks for the memory joggle.

And thanks for the letter. It's good to know that Idahoans who care about their environment are not remaining silent about this!

12. Ought to invite Cheney to go along with him for the hunt
things could get interesting. Too bad the author could not have written that without "Barbaric redneck". That's how I feel, but I don't want to inflame things.

15. What kind of man is Butch Otter?
He's an idiot. The only thing I can praise him for is the moratorium on coal plants, which only last another 8 months.

8. Hmm...An "outsider"
Someone mentioned in a cross-posted thread, that Idahoans do not like outsiders. Maybe they need to be reminded that this guy IS an outsider.

9. Most are, anymore (at least in the Boise area)
Funny, I haven't seen a "Don't Californicate Idaho" bumper sticker in several years, even though they were quite popular in the 70's and 80's.

That's what they're waiting for. They keep putting it on the ballot with the hope that people will get tired of saying what they want. Then they'll interpret the silence as a yes vote for destruction.

most photo'ed in the world are being slaughtered. Hang in there, outside. Make sure you don't give up.
