SA forestry industry 'still in white hands', says minister
By Sapa

Cape Town - The ownership of South Africa's forestry industry is "still in the hands of the few white individuals", Water Affairs and Forestry Minister Buyelwa Sonjica said on Monday, in a statement marking the September 1 start of National Arbor Week.

She said it was important the forestry sector contributed towards strengthening the rural economy.

"It is important that as the department we focus on strengthening the forestry industry because of its importance in creating employment especially in the rural areas

The industry contributed about two percent towards GDP.
