U.S. says plans to stem anti-Israel resolutions in UN
http://www.haaretzdaily.com/hasen/spages/478466.html

By Shlomo Shamir, Haaretz Correspondent, and Haaretz Service

<snip>

The U.S. State Department announced its intentions to stem the number of resolutions against Israel passed in the United Nations General Assembly, Israel Radio announced early Saturday morning.

<snip>

The statements follow a resolution adopted at a non-governmental conference committee meeting Wednesday at UN headquarters calling for UN member nations and international bodies to increase their pressure on Israel to put an end to the occupation.

The resolution included an explicit threat that "if Israel does not comply , sanctions will be leveled and an arms embargo will be put in place." The resolution also threatened economic divestment from Israel.

2. This isn't news at all.
It's been Washington's policy for the last 50 years. They're only just now stating that it's their official policy. Israel; right or wrong, they're our buds. Even if they drag us into WWIII. America doesn't care because we've been co-opted by a foreign country. Now we don't have to bother formulating our own policies. So much easier!

Screw Israel. It's America that I care about.

5. The US has nearly always behaved that way on the Security Council...
Making a big song and dance about trying to block 'anti-Israel' (that is, anything that calls for protection of the Palestinian people or dares to criticise the occupation) resolutions in the General Assembly may be a new tactic. After all, the GA is just a creater of non-binding resolutions that no-one usually takes too much notice of. But now talk of sanctions are in the wind and picking up speed, things are a bit different and recalcitrant countries that dare to refuse to fall into line with the US view that violations of international law are to be encouraged if they're done by Western styled democracies are going to have to be bullied into seeing the light....

How exactly does the US block GA resolutions that they deem to be 'anti-Israel'? Do they threaten and/or try to bribe other countries, or do they think they've blocked a resolution if they can talk another tiny, dependent-on-US-foreign-aid Pacific island to become part of that tiny group of other forgettable and tiny Pacific islands that always vote with the US, no matter what the resolution is about?

Me, I can hardly wait for the day when the UN becomes what it must have surely been set up to do, and we won't see silly resolutions against racism, we won't have our time wasted by silly resolutions treating women in developing countries as though they deserve equality and family planning services, and most importantly we won't see resolutions criticising human rights abuses and illegal occupations. FDR would be so proud of what the UN would become if he could see it!!

Violet...
