ANGUISH IN DARFUR
An Attack on the Will to Learn
Sudanese villagers recount Arab militia assaults on blacks' schools. They say the aim is to rob children of their education.
By Robyn Dixon
Times Staff Writer

September 28, 2004

KALMA CAMP, Sudan — The walls of the school at Kailek village were made of straw and sticks, so the bullets went right through them.

As the children studied one morning about six months ago, armed Arabs on camels and horses attacked the village in Sudan's Darfur region and surrounded the school. They raised their weapons and fired again and again, gunning down the trapped children and teachers.

The most haunting memory of that terrible day is the sound of children screaming and weeping.<snip>

His son Adam Ibrahim Abdullah, 9, and an adopted nephew, Haroun Sherif, 13, died in the hail of bullets. Two daughters, 8 and 12, escaped. Six teachers and 36 children were killed, Abdullah said.

Afterward, the attackers burned the schoolbooks.<snip>

1. Why is this topic of so little interest on a liberal website?

2. I am reluctant to get into it because,
while it is an ethnic conflict, and an atrocious one,
the characterization of the sides as "Arab" and "black"
seems wide of the mark, and to get that issue straight
and then attempt to say something coherent about the
complexities of the real case seems likely to be a doomed
effort. The civil war in the South has been going on for
quite a long time now, too. I used to post about that now
and then, and mostly those posts sank like a stone.
Lord's Resistance Army and all that, not interesting.

3. And yet you (and many others) have no such reluctance weighing in on
I/P.

6. I knew you could get it.

Many of us come here to "weigh in" on issues that we
feel we can be clear about. I've even seen you pipe up
about things now and then. You could almost say that is
what the place is for, to give people a chance to speak
up when they feel like it, and yet they are able to stay
silent if they prefer not, no problem.

7. anything posted in the F/A section
gets little response Jim - your own eyes should be able to tell you that - threads about this situation in the GD get many more responses.

The other reason may also be though, that everyone here agree's - the Sudanese government clearly has little interest in solving the problem given that it's part of it and it's horrible.

A thread gets boring quickly when everyone says "yes it's horrible" "I agree" etc
