A bit on Al Zarqawi
Edited on Thu Sep-30-04 04:47 AM by Envisioned
EDIT/ADD:

Without inviting anyone to actually pursue actions, abuse or harrassment of anyone, I was hoping to get some insight from you folks.

What are your views on Al-Zarqawi? How would you feel if someone were to refer to him as a hero or otherwise defend him?

My personal opinion is that he is not even worthy of being called a man. He's a beast who has engaged in horrific acts that I could not even believe were possible. He's not the only one, sadly, but he is currently the most public.

Thoughts?

note: I've left the original post intact, as listed below, as I do not want to obfuscate any of my posts or seem as though I am hiding anything. The following was kept for integrity.

I've noticed a few people on the internet defending him lately. Apparently they consider him a "hero" and are saying he's just defending his people/brothers.

I was disgusted by this, and was wondering what you folks think of that sort of behavior.

1. Just for future reference...
When you post "a few people on the internet" and "they" as your sources, don't expect DUers not to be suspicious of your motives (especially when one notes your low post count).

You still have time to edit your post. I suggest you flesh out your thesis and add your opinion on the issue.

Welcome to DU!

2. noted
I was hoping to avoid having a sudden attack on anyone, which is why I didn't post blog links. I'm all for discussion, but the last thing I want is to cause a verbal conflageration online. I appreciate the input though. I'll consider ways to better present my questions without inviting potential harrassment.

10. i was attempting to avoid unnecessary aggression
so I edited the post to be a general discussion, rather than a direct reference to anyone in particular. I only left the original text in there so that it would be understood where the thread originated.

3. Some people just have a kneejerk response in favor of anyone fighting back
Personally, I wonder if he is still around. There have been reports of his death, and also that he had a leg amputated in Baghdad a couple of years ago. You might as well call him Emmanuel Goldstein.

The real thing, AFAIK, has a checkered career covering Afghanistan and quite a few other Islamic countries, but he has reportedly spent much more time killing Shi'ites than Western 'infidels.' If he really still exists, I could easily imagine him fomenting civil war in Iraq for just that purpose.

It's possible that even if he is no longer with us, his associates are carrying on his mission on their own. Hard to say what their main focus is, other than putting in their time on the Al Qaeda Grand Tour, whose main stop these days seems to be in Iraq. Don't know if they are still motivated by hatred of Shi'ism or not.

8. It is an insult, which I have retracted, and apologise for..
It's from the Spanish Civil War(1936)The socalist government
were being attacked by Franco,a fascist who wanted control of the country. Spys were sent into the government controlled Madrid to agitate and disrupt whilst pretending to be allies.Franco called them "fifth columnists",Madrid was surrounded by four columns, and he boasted the fifth was already inside the city.
:) :-)

6. Well, I have a low number of posts too, even lower than
yours, and I don't have any hesitation about stating that I believe al-Zarqawi is a psychotic piece of shit. There is absolutely no excuse for viewing him as anything other than someone who's shed every last bit of his humanity.

7. thanks for the response
I'm not sure what my post count has to do with anything, but....eh...

I'm not sure how people can justify supporting him, let alone calling him a hero.

Anyone who does that to another human is a monster.

11. Are you a freeper or a liar?
"I've noticed a few people on the internet defending him lately."

Links to some evidence of this?

No matter how much you folks try to duck and dodge Bin Laden as an issue expect to hear more about Tora Bora and the fuckups by Chimpy and the rest of your sorry crew.

12. For the record,
I never said word 1 about Bin Laden, which means I didn't dodge a damn thing. If I wanted to talk about Bin Laden, I'd have started a thread about Bin Laden.

Before I bother to justify the rest of your post with a response, read my entire post. What you quoted was part of the post I edited, the original text of which I left up in good faith because I felt the actual point would be the focus of discussion.

Address that and we'll talk.
