5. I've always been taught - keep your finger off the trigger until your ready to shoot
Not to mention shes probably covering the photographer with the muzzle.

6. Simulation... to learn proper and safe habits
Treating a "toy" gun like a toy will make you treat a real gun like a toy as well.

You don't want to pick up bad habits, afterall.

Welcome to DU! :hi:

9. Thanks for the welcome!
All I'm getting at is the camera guy took a picture from off center (not covered) and that he may have very well placed himself "down range". Pictures such as this are hard to pass judgement on without knowing the whole story.

8. Not enough context for a proper judgment.
If she is in the middle of a simulation, she is fine.
If the rifle is configured to activate the electronics via trigger pressure, she is fine.
She is not covering the camera man.

10. I'm not sure how that photo was taken
but from what I've seen of that video clip, the weapon is pointed downrange, and she does fire.

16. It is configured that way
Look at the air hose hanging off the handguard, and the barrel plug for the laser or whatever it is that sets off the sensors in the EST. I have taken photos of foreign dignitaries and college kids (potential recruits) using the EST 2000 system exactly the way the photographer in this case took it. Criticize her for anything, but criticize accurately. I know I intentionally tried to get photos of soldiers showing the individual they were with how to operate the weapons.

It is clearly an EST, the photo guy is downrange on purpose to get that shot, I don't think criticizing her for this is going to be a winner.

11. She's commander of the Alaska National Guard & probably visiting a unit during training with
simulation equipment.

"The governor as ex officio commander of the militia of the state has command of the Alaska National Guard and the Alaska Naval Militia while they are not in active federal service."

IMO the picture does not show her violating safe practices although others can quibble if they want to.

Look at where her eyes are directed, she's either cross-eyed, or totally out of it.

15. EST 2000 system
That is a system that uses compressed air to feel like it is cycling the weapon, it is like a giant video game that is used to teach people marksmanship. That picture is not neccessarily a bad move on her part.

That's disturbing.

And how do you tell the difference in a Major and a LtCol with those new uniforms?

21. It's a simulation system
The entire room, and on most bases entire building is a giant videogame simulation of a range, where people can get some practice in with the quicker and cheaper FATS or EST 2000 system. No one was in any danger here, it is quite clearly the EST 2000, you can tell because of the hose for compressed air hanging out of the handguard of the rifle and the barrel plug. Check out what the inside of an M16 muzzle brake looks like-

No weird white filler material. Those weapons are modified pretty heavily to be used in the EST system, and are no longer capable of accepting real ammunition.

24. subdued rank insignia
The subdued rank insignia has not changed in 40 years. The black oak leaf denotes an LTC while the dull brown denotes a MAJ. On the ACUs the rank insignia is held in place by Velcro patch approximately about the second shirt button rather than on the collar as was done on BDUs or on the epaulets of the field jackets.

Were that battalion commander wearing dress greens or blues his rank insignia would be silver and on his epaulets. A major would wear gold oak leaves.

23. Hmmmmm
It looks to me like she is sighting on target and the soldier is looking at the results. Considering the 'weapon' is a simulgun the photographer is in no danger.
