Home invasion results in shooting of one suspect

A resident trying to protect himself during a home invasion shot and seriously wounded one of two invaders early Monday.

Spokane police said the man underwent surgery at a Spokane hospital for two handgun wounds to his abdomen, and the other suspect ran and remained at large Monday afternoon.

A woman living at the home in the 4100 block of East 16th Avenue called 911 about 2 a.m., reporting that two men had entered the house and that her male roommate was confronting them in another room. The call came in about the same time the roommate fired shots in the other room, said Officer Tim Moses, police spokesman.

Both of the suspects were armed, police said.

Police have been unable to provide a full description of the two suspects, both in their 20s.

''I just got robbed at my pizza shop, 1077 West Exchange Street,'' Hayes says on the recording released by Akron police.

''OK, what kind. . . .does he have a weapon?'' a dispatcher asks.

''He had a weapon, a gun. I shot him. He's across the street laying down right now,'' Hayes says.

''You shot him?'' the dispatcher replies in a startled voice.

''I shot him right in front of me while he was holding a gun on me,'' Hayes replies."


A friend of mine recently complained about the local criminals coming on his condo property to hang out and rip-off the laundry machines. I told him that whenever he saw suspicious persons (it's a small condo and he knows all the residents) to call the police. He complained that when you do that, they start grilling YOU, asking for your name, etc... I told him to call the police, and say, "We have an intruder at 1000 Paradise Lane." and hang up.

This has happened to me twice, where I call the police and the 911 operator starts asking all kinds of questions. I haven't had to call in a long time, but in the future I will do exactly as I advised my friend. Tell them what they need to know and hang up.

4. What's worse is when the cops grill you about it rather than send help.
