It would seem that despite the fact that gun ownership rates have continued to increase, accidental deaths from firearms have decreased.

1. Just out of interest, do you have ownership numbers.
They would be interesting, worldwide, actually.

Come on, that's like posting a link from the Brady campaign from a couple of years ago or from the NRA. Give us something current from a non partisan organization.

17. Thirty years of statistics don't change
in two years. I've posted a variety of sources. But unless it's the nra or nra-ila, you won't believe it. That's where the gun increase info is coming from, the nra-ila. It's the same numbers and verbage posted all over the place.

19. I found a gallup poll that had it at 43% in 1972 and 42% in 2008.
Seems there is quite a bit of conflicting information on the subject.

What is the source for yours?

Just the surge in gun sales the last six months would prove that chart to be wrong.

9. It wouldn't matter, that chart deals with percentages.
Since guns don't biodegrade and most thinking people don't throw them away, it's only logical that gun ownership has increased, even if the percentage of the population which owns guns has decreased.

20. One can have high confidence in those numbers. Governments have been doing vital statistics for
a long time.

However things like:
- Number of weapons in civilian hands
- Number of owners/household with firearms
- Number of times the display of a weapon prevents a crime
and others defy reliable reporting.

29. Individuals own more guns per person
But the overall number of people and households with guns has gone down dramatically.

8. Speaking of stupidity
This is probably another thread, but this is as good a place as any.

I was at the post office, a real post office , and saw a sign that said that it was illegal to "carry or store" a firearm on USPS "property". So that would appear to mean that you can't even leave it in your car. But in looking around the net, someone astutely pointed out that it was perfectly legal to carry a gun in a sealed and labelled box into the post office and mail it.

Dithering

21. USPS
You can ship any long gun as long as it has no marking as to what it is also the recipient must be a ffl or company that repairs guns out of state in state as long as the person is over 18 and eligible to receive a long gun it's no big deal and no hand guns ever you will have to fedex ups your hog leg

Edited on Fri Apr-03-09 12:08 AM by onehandle
Most families had at least a gun when I was a kid. These days the majority are owned by people who are "into guns."

And they know how to use them.

25. Is it possible they do own guns, and you are unaware?
I'm at work right now, we have about a couple dozen emplyoees.

Everyone but one person owns at least one long gun. Most own more than that.

'Gun people' tend to open up if you are a 'gun person' yourself.

Edited on Fri Apr-03-09 02:15 PM by TWiley
Compare total gunshot wounds including deaths, intentional or accidental, with total gun ownership rates for a fair analysis. You compare the greatest number of gun owners with less than the total number of gun-related incidents. Furhermore, you only count injuries resulting in death.

Only one person died accidentally this year with a mohawk haircut. This means that you are safer if you sport one ....... right?
